Re: Is My Computer Borked?

I'm guessing your CPU is dead, probably from the hammer. I've seen a Pentium 4 run sans heatsink for a few minutes before thermal throttling, so your CPU should at least post in this case. That or the broken locking gate is not allowing the CPU to get a good contact. It's worth a try to fix that gat...

Re: Steam Streaming

It could be a combination of the steamlink, the fact that the AP is on a different floor, and/or my perception. I should do further testing.

Re: Steam Streaming

I've got a steam link. It's a pretty amazing little device. No graphical degradation that I've noticed. I've been running it via wifi, and as long as I'm not too terribly far from my WAP, everything is great other then a slight control input delay. That should be solved when I find time to actually ...

Re: Directed Wireless Install

I'd suggest looking at Ubiquiti . Their Airmax stuff sounds exactly like what you are looking for since it's designed for WISPs. Might a bit more expensive then engenius but tends to have a 10km+ range at 450mbps+ depending on what you get. The trees might an issue, 5 ghz really doesn't like going t...

Re: Car shopping - Subaru Crosstrek

As someone who currently owns a pair of Outbacks, used to own an Impreza and comes from the family that drives a lot of Subarus, I'd recommend Subaru anything. The boxer engines are pretty indestructible (other then that pesky "needs a new set of head gaskets ever 100k to 150k miles" issue...

Re: Help with a possible new PC

I'm not sure the 8GB of extra ram justifies the Windows 8 one, but I'm not a huge fan of Windows 8..... Actually I should clarify, I've never used a windows 8 machine. I'm not a huge fan of the Windows 2012 GUI, which is the same as Windows 8. Unless you run things that are very memory intensive, yo...

Re: Weird screen wobble?

Probably something do with the RF frequency of the playing a bit of havoc with the deflection coils in the back of monitor. There is enough copper wire back there to pick a lot of interference from just about everything. I also can see it being possible given the age of the monitor, the deflection s...

Re: World of Tanks Mark III

ELCs playing fighter plane are always fun. I don't understand why anybody ever uses them as scouts; they're really more like giant invisible guns with a huge engine and some tiny little treads attached. It's because it doesn't have the radio for scouting or that great of a view range and unlike oth...

Re: Good Linux Distros For A Low-End Netbook

The lightest you can go while still using relatively modern versions of packages is a stripped down Arch Linux installation, but it's exceedingly annoying to set up and the community is unbearable; the time spent making it work would probably be better invested working to earn money to buy a better...

Re: World of Tanks Mark 2

I managed to have an excellent match in my A13 last night. Ran to the rocks in the middle of Serene Coast, and spent the entire match popping of cover just long enough to toss the entire cartridge of 40mm into the nearest heavy's tracks. Manage to track a KV-2, KV-1S and a Churchill VII out in the o...

Re: World of Tanks Mark 2

I finally got the top gun for the Tiger, and I must say Wow, that changes everything. The ability to reliable penetrate things is wonderful. Plus since it's an 8.8cm, the ammo is so much cheaper then my KV-3's 122mm. Makes me wonder if I should start running the KV-3 with it's 100mm instead, probab...

Re: World of Tanks Mark 2

The Ram II is fun in my opinion. It's pretty much the same as the sherman, just with a less powerful yet faster gun. It's great for hunting down lights but weaker against other medium and heavies due to the low damage, though it can hurt them given that it has decent penetration. It makes a rather g...

Re: World of Tanks

While running my ELC, got into a jousting match last night with another ELC. My friends who were watching thought it was pretty funny due to the fact that we both keep missing and I keep ramming him while waiting the agonizing 12 seconds to reload. Apparently I was knocking 1-2 hp off both of our li...

Re: Building a cluster

The Intel D525MW board? Yes, it's got a dual core atom processor soldered to the board. Though if you are looking for processing power per pound, you are better off as other suggested with processors other then the atom. Most likely, a mid-grade Intel processor would be the best from a price versus ...

Re: Building a cluster

You might want to research if which of the two different architectures you listed ARM or x86_64 is better at doing the computing you are looking at. From the point of view of expandability, x86 is probably the way to go. ARM stuff rarely has the ability to change core system components (memory, netw...

Re: Unit testing and GPL

Code that uses GPL doesn't become GPL'ed automatically, it's only if you wish to distributed said code to other people. If you are just using GPL code to test other code, then you have nothing to worry about. If your final product doesn't contain any GPL code then you are in the free and clear to li...

Re: World of Tanks

I had an interesting fight in my KV last night. Managed to get Scout and Steel Wall medals at the same time. Was playing on the new Swamp map and drove somewhere I shouldn't have (at least not with the slow KV) and promptly got hit and tracked. Half the other team (which is apparently how I spotted ...

Re: using GPL licenced code commercially

From what I understand (it's been a while since I've read the GPL license), if you use GPL code in your own code, your code has to be licensed under GPL for you to distribute it. If you link to libraries, then you must provide the source code for those libraries (or provide links to where one can fi...

Pretty sure that \, | and / aren't "novelty" characters. I use them on an hourly basis at least. Hitting alt-shift-7 to produce a \ would be a huge pain in the ass (especially on windows systems). Then again I'm a just a silly systems/network admin and therefore not your average user.

Re: World of Tanks

I swear the T82 with the 105mm feels like cheating. Something is funny about being one of the smallest tanks on the field yet having one of the largest guns. I'd complain about the paper thin armor, but people rarely seem to shoot back for some reason.

Re: Strange vibration (/broken CPU fan?)

How strong of vibration are we talking about here? I don't think I've seen a case/cpu fan cause very strong vibrations. Lots of noise, yes, vibrations, no. Though I can see it being possible, maybe a manufacturing defect or something like that. I'd suggest unplugging it from the motherboard for a sh...

Re: Your Favorite Progressive Small Towns in America.

Not at all Rapid, you and Irish's feed back are most welcome :) Really you sort of confirm something that was a bit of realization to me. For a while I always assumed all aspects of a big city had to be somehow mirrored in a small town, but in a smaller fashion. The truth I find, is that the aspect...
