Re: German Nassau's (Dreadnoughts)
The British didn't really gain development time- they didn't design Dreadnought before anyone else had designed an all-big-gun battleship. They just commissioned her faster, mostly by pulling some of the parts from other capital ships under construction, and by putting off doing some of the fitting...

German Nassau's (Dreadnoughts)
What if the Germans built the first all-big gun battleships, commonly known as dreadnoughts? Do the British attempt to answer? Can the British answer the Germans? It has been said that by designing HMS Dreadnought the British gave up their overwhelming preponderance in pre-dreadnought battleships by...

Re: Are ISD II's Battleships or Dreadnoughts?
Historically a dreadnaught is a sub-category of battleship, typically having higher speeds and more big guns of the largest available caliber.

Call the Death Star a siege train. Yes a siege train is typically a land-based system, and trains usually move fast. But when this train arrives the siege is pretty much over.

Re: Military Doctrines of the Clone Wars
Then what was that about Anakin's plan to specifically target the bridge of the Malevolence just to get Grievous? None other Jedi objected to that. Obi Wan later gave orders to target the bridge too. That sounds suspiciously close to a shoot on sight order since SW capships don't go immediately dow...

Re: How was the creation of the Clone Army financed?
I am not certain how much the Trade Federation military cost to build, but they built a decent-enough sized army and navy. Granted they converted merchant hulls into warships, but that can still be expensive. I think we are seriously underestimating the amount of wealth in the galaxy. Look at it thi...

Also, why are you ignoring that it is trivially easy to add variation to clone imprinting? Could adding that variation be what the Kaminoans do best? Just as in every other industry, those organizations involved in cloning as a business are going to want to differentiate their products somehow, per...

Furthermore, given the stigma that would result against droids, I think the Republic citizens would be more comfortable with organics as their soldiers rather than what the evil enemy is using. I'd like to add that given the ease with which droids can be manufactured (and be halfway decent soldiers...

In which case you have to wonder at the profit motive of idiots building ships for their enemy throughout the period of 'tension' beforehand. I will gladly point you towards the situation in Europe prior to the First World War, where English shipbuilders built superdreadnaughts for any nation that ...

I'd like to add a third thing to note to this, possibility of communication hijack, after all if you're commanding a battle from a "safe" location you'll like get all your combat informantion via a transmission, now think if your opposition is able to breach your communication protocols a...

Couldn't having observers distributed throughout the ship be a solution? After all, if a vessel is underneath the Executor it can't really see them from the bridge.

Re: "Interference", "Jamming", droid targetting, etc.
Looks like people has forgotten the whole ANH scene in the novel, where the Commander wanted to fire on R2D2 escape pod by simply pressing on a button. That has to be automated targeting. There can be automated targeting, but having manned turrets (whether manned by sentient beings or manned by dro...

Even a smart missile can't execute a 90 degree turn though, and that is what the torpedoes needed to do to get into the exhaust vent, right?

Even if the Y-wings could make the shot unassisted (by the Force) that doesn't mean its a guaranteed hit.
And I would like to know how "smart" most Star Wars missiles/torpedoes are. As smart as some of today's missiles?

Re: "Interference", "Jamming", droid targetting, etc.
The human crew doesn't have to be manually targeting the guns, but if they lose communications to the bridge for fire control and its an automated turret then you need someone there to pick targets, right? And who's better at trouble-shooting/jury-rigging stuff: A human or a battledroid?

Isn't Anakin able to understand it a bit too?
Anyways that is sort of beside the point... I suppose he learns it over time just like over time you get to recognize certain things that your pet does that mean certain things. It doesn't have to be that he understands the language.

I know about Vader's suit short-circuiting, but that means that Force Lightning does actual damage, and thus could be lethal. And what I meant with the first quote was that Palps had the intention of killing Luke with it, it might be a slow death, but is still supposed to be lethal. Heck, when Dook...

Re: Minimum Number of Troops needed for Planetary Invasion
The rebels were able to set up a tactical-level shield capable of repelling 'any bombardment' in TESB, on a shithole ice planet. There's obviously an implied "reasonable" in that statement. It isn't literally any bombardment, because otherwise the shield would have prevented the Imperials...

Re: Minimum Number of Troops needed for Planetary Invasion
If they have the capability to build such a powerful planet-based weapon then why would you bother doing anything other than building a fortress or two on every planet and garrisoning it? It would probably be pretty cheap. Although I don't know if the shields could hold up to sustained bombardment.

Something like this perhaps? http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/d/d0/Vienna_flak_tower_dsc01594.jpg/450px-Vienna_flak_tower_dsc01594.jpg A strongly fortified static antiaircraft position, which Allied aircraft essentially avoided. Maybe "units" mean armies or even planetary army groups. Possibly. Even so 9 trillion clones doesn't sound like an awful lot when drafting 1% of the population of secondary worlds (protectorates/colonies/etc) would net you 200 trillion conscripts. Although if we applied the statement abou...

Also a theory for the professionally paranoid; This is timed to take the heat off of Iran and their nuke program.
