Re: Can communism/socialism work?

My two cents: A planned economy will never work as well as a perfect market. This is even assuming that people are all nice and honest and follow the plan to the dot without question. The reason for so is very simple: In a planned economy, it is required for you to know beforehand how capable each ...

Re: Can communism/socialism work?

Do you count the deaths incurred during colonization by the Western imperialist power against capitalism? How about the textile industrialization in New England and the UK, fueled with cheap slave labor picked cotton? I recommend this thread . Ask yourself whether the standards, concepts, and frame...

Re: Can communism/socialism work?

In the context of Communism practiced by the Soviets. I do not believe it would ever work. True Communism was in fact, practiced by Lenin after the October and February Revolutions. However, because the system he developed was unable to cope with the damage to Russia after Civil War, Lenin had to ma...

Re: Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Mandalorian Wars)

I'll probably throw the Emperor in there somehow. It is kind of hard though since the writer that gave the interview about the Sith Emperor than retracted a few of his statements and now its anyone's guess as to what exactly happened.

Re: Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Mandalorian Wars)

Note: The Battle of Serroco was covered by JJM in the KOTOR comics and I'm most certainly not going to attempt to recreate it here (and do an infinitely poorer job than a professional like John Jackson Miller.) The following is my version, similar, but my own. In many ways this chapter was fairly e...

Re: Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Mandalorian Wars)

Minor nitpick: nerd herd Anyway, the first thought I had reading this was "And so it begins." Then reading about Mandalore's plan, it was really easy to see how Revan is going to wipe the floor with him, which is addressed in the games, but it was nice to see it here. This really looks li...

Re: Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Mandalorian Wars)

I have to give some serious credit to Darth Wong for his awesome page on strategy on the main site, because the following chapter pretty much exists because of it. Chapter Three - Rules of War (Version 1.0) Early 3963 BBY – One week later in orbit over Dxun. Ten soldiers wisely led will beat a hundr...

Re: Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Early Mandalorian Wars)

I'm not sure yet, I may go all the way up to Malak's betrayal or just split it in two, with this one ending at Malachor V and the other one taking place after that.

Re: Untitled SW Fanfic: EU-KOTOR (Early Mandalorian Wars)

Chapter Two - Doubt (Version 1.0) I had therefore to remove knowledge, in order to make room for belief. - Immanuel Kant "Zoom in here, on his face. Yes, yes, very good!" Zarik Charr, scrambled about the system of holo-projectors, hastily giving orders to the techs working on pre-producti...

Re: There's no such thing as ethics!!!

Ethics can certainly exist and in fact, they do exist, otherwise no one would be making value judgments on actions. There is this false idea that if you take God out of the equation, then everything is relative and therefore Ethics can be abandoned whenever the need arises. Ethical relativism is not...

Re: Question About Free Will and God's Omniscence

His definition of free will is grounded in Pragmatism. Because humans believe they have a choice and feel like they make choices, they have Free Will. That isn't pragmatism. That is accepting that feelings are concrete statements about reality. As any crazy person can tell you, they aren't. Isn't t...

Re: Question About Free Will and God's Omniscence

I don't see why a multiplicity of futures is necessary for free will. If "free" means some particular kind of relationship between the mental states of the agent and actions performed, then quite trivially "free will" is compatible even with the case of only one possible future....

Re: Question About Free Will and God's Omniscence

What is his definiton of free will then? Because it's literary impossible to have more than one possible choice when the future is fixed. So if it is possible for anyone to know the future, it has to be fixed - and therefore there can be no choices that could alter it in any way. Which means ALL ch...

Re: Question About Free Will and God's Omniscence

Well, basically, yes - to a degree. Such a god could still know everything that happens right now , which should fit the definition of omnisicience. That god would not have precognition, but that is not really required. If you want to get a bit more esoteric, he could also know all possible outcome...

Question About Free Will and God's Omniscence

I'm currently in the middle of a debate with a theist on the following question: Is Free Will compatible with an omniscient God? My argument goes like this. 1. God is the creator of everything. (G > E) 2. Everything, is defined as all: events, material and spiritual objects and/or entities and time....

Dark Knight Of The Soul: EU-KOTOR (Mandalorian Wars)

This is a WIP fanfic I've been working on (on and off, here and there.) It's set during the early Mandalorian Wars so its an EU fanfiction. It's mostly about Revan and Malak with the goal of staying as close to canon as possible. I don't have a title for it yet so maybe someone could suggest one as ...

Re: Science Question on Class F Star for Fantasy Setting

I'm saying it would shift from a biological survival mode to an ecological survival mode, turning into a reverse greenhouse effect to cool the planet as it begins to exit the habitable zone. Similar to how Earth cooled down? I suppose my confusion here is when you say “exit the habitable zone.” I t...

Re: Science Question on Class F Star for Fantasy Setting

Something with only twice the luminosity of Sol at a roughly equivalent point in its evolution is only going to be about 1.2 solar masses, however, so the Goldilocks window is still going to be billions of years wide. One thing I do in settings on similar worlds is consider the role that plankton h...

Re: Changes (Dresden Spoilers)

The thing that surprised me most about Changes is how far Harry went. In this book he went to places I never thought he would go and I feel it makes for an excellent showcase of just how dire his situation is. The entire series he has been reinforced as being essentially incorruptible and then now,...

Science Question on Class F Star for Fantasy Setting

This is my first post/thread here (I try not to begin my life at a forum by opening a brand new thread, but I have a science related question) so I would normally begin by introducing myself, but this Forum doesn't posses a specific sub-forum for that so I guess I'll just say hello, I'm Autokrat. Be...
