Re: Canadian Parents Raising "Genderless" Baby
Ghetto Edit... I am interested in knowing a couple of things: 1) Why did the mother feel it necessary to announce to the world that she wouldn't be announcing her child's sex to the world? 2) Does the mother feel that Jazz - her 5 year old son who prefers pink, long hair, and dresses - did not get t...

Re: Canadian Parents Raising "Genderless" Baby
Here is the mother's letter in response to the media furor she created by publicly announcing that she wouldn't be announcing her child's gender. The bus driver smiled at me, my three children, the snacks that were rolling in all directions and the grocery bags hung too heavy on the back of the str...

Re: Wisconsin governor: balance budget by breaking unions
The Democrats in the state Assembly are filibustering, and those in the Senate are still in Illinois. The unions have agreed to the proposed economic cuts, but don't want to lose their bargaining rights - Walker said no. Wisconsin is trying to refinance its debt and must pass a budget by this Saturd...

The Catholic Church didn't make the app, and isn't selling it - a private company is doing that. The Church just approved it.

LOLWUT? Obviously there are lots of happy families who all get on fine as the kids grow into adulthood, mine is one of them. It is not impossibly hard, you just need everyone to put some effort into not being jerks. No doubt. On my mom's side (traditional Italian upbringing with the "live at h...

Re: Gaming slang pisses off Anglophone
While it might be more ephemeral (possibly, it's been around for the better part of a decade and seems to be entering the pop-culture register), how is it less practical then any of those archaic words? It's an informal affirmative, and thus is likely to actually be used (similar to ain't, which ha...

Re: Gaming slang pisses off Anglophone
So, why is it harder to actually understand? It's simply relatively rare as a word, but, then again, so are "exsanguination," "conflagration," "ken," or "revenant." Because fo'shizzle is far more ephemeral and far less practical. There needs to be some measur...

Lower Corporate taxes (Without more deficit, lol) No problem, it means the people (meaning the poor & middle class) will get gangbanged in all holes. Obama specifically said that what was needed was to close loopholes in the law so some corporations (esp small businesses) didn't end up paying h...

Re: Gaming slang pisses off Anglophone
Here is how adults use words. First, you define the word. Second, you use the word. Isn't it the other way around most of the time? You use a word in context, get the vacuous look in response because context wasn't enough to explain it, and then clarify what it means? Only because this is the inter...

Re: The Tunisia Protests Thread
Over the past couple of days, Tunisia has been wracked by protests and rioting, set off by an incident where a guy set himself on fire in response to having his vegetable stand confiscated. The rioting finally reached the capital in the last couple of days, but the incident that started the whole t...

Re: Just how loaded is the term "apologist" here?
"Apologist" also evokes the word "apology". You don't apologize for good things, but rather only for bad things, thus implying that the apologist is defending something bad. I completely agree with this statement. People sling the word "apologist" at someone defending ...

TSO is essentially what happened to the band Savatage when they discovered that they could make way more money doing what they'd always done except with a Christmas theme. They are an 80s hair band. They are heavy metal rockers. And they sing a lot about Baby Jesus because it makes them more money t...

Good Calories, Bad Calories , by Gary Taubes. It's not a diet book; it's pretty much wall-to-wall science on what happens when you eat food, and seriously the best one I've read. Despite criticism of the author, the actual science he presents has remained pretty much unchallenged since the book was...

Re: Texas HOA forecloses Army Captain's house over unpaid du
There are couple of things about this story that are strange to me. I really don't get the concept of owning a home free and clear, but having to pay monthly dues on top of that. I realize that monthly dues are not anywhere near the ballpark of a mortgage payment, but isn't the point of owning a hou...

Re: Does President Obama deserve to be re-elected?
I voted yes (US citizen). I think he will make a better lame duck president, and I'm curious to know - if he decides not to run for a second term - what free license that will give him in office. Also, he's seriously helped with foreign relations. Obama has seemed to me to be like a child going thro...

I guess I don't really understand what you're saying... The article indicates that the test subjects were participating in the experiment online. But if the researchers can't see their subjects, how is that better?

Thanks, Archaic`. If his results can't be replicated, then that's exactly what he is. His experiment wasn't replicated. From the article above, emphasis mine: One failed attempt at replication has already been posted online. In this study, Jeff Galak of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Penn...
