Re: Reasons for the Federation not including Marines/Army
I suppose the main reason we don't see the Federation having a standing Army or Marines is because they simply don't need one. Having enjoyed a prolonged period of time without full scale war they simply didn't need one, and I doubt they had the political will to keep an Army on standby. During the ...

Re: TNG without the annoying bits
Make Worf older, then. Yeah, that would work. To maintain his character would require the Khittomer massacre to have happened earlier, but that wouldn't change terribly much (possibly Yar's daughter? I can't remember if the E-C was at Khittomer...). I think Yar, and the E-C, were at Narendra (sp) I...

Re: TNG without the annoying bits
But the ship is not a city in space. It sort of is. The writers didn't really follow through with it, but we see some elements - there's a variety of people and services aboard, and it is meant for an ongoing mission out there. The crew live in pretty regular homes and go to fairly regular jobs eac...

Re: TNG without the annoying bits
Children on the Enterprise: Never got my head around this to be honest. Seems a stupid idea whichever way you look at it. If you think of the ship as a city in space, it's a lot easier to understand. But the ship is not a city in space. The closest thing to a city in space would have been a starbas...

Re: TNG without the annoying bits
Civilians on the Enterprise: Not so much of a problem if they are mission specialists, but instead of just saying they are on board, they should have at least tried to do some decent stories about them. See, I thought about this one time. Being so far from the center of power, you'd need big, multi...

Re: TNG without the annoying bits
Troi: Would have been better if they had made her part of the medical set up, instead of giving her a seat on the bridge. Looking back at old TNG episodes, I just don't feel the character served much of a purpose on the bridge. The whole empathic ability angle wasn't really necessary either IMO - th...

Re: The Federation
Until the Dominion war the Federation as a whole had never really been on the brink of destruction. Yes, we had seen instances of individual member worlds being under threat but not the whole of the Federation. Even when the Borg attacked Earth, the Enterprise was able to stop them both times even t...

Re: The Defiant in The Way of the Warrior
In TNG and Early DS9 that was substantial reinforcements. The 40 ship fleet at Wolf 359 was an armada. Picard's blockade in Redemption was only 23 ships. Even in Way Of The Warrior, a mere 6 federation starships were enough to make Gowron re-think his attack on the station. It only in season 6 do t...

Re: The Defiant in The Way of the Warrior
As soon as the Dominion threat was discovered Starfleet should have had a fleet at Bajor at all times. One thing I find rather strange is that in TDIC Eddington mentions Starfleet is sending 9 ships to reinforce the sector. I'm pretty sure someone says these are "substantial" reinforcement...

Re: The Defiant in The Way of the Warrior
Out of universe, that would have taken away from her being the Defiant. If there's enough of them for that and we get shown there are , she stops being special. Same reason the only other Galaxy class we ever saw in TNG blew up on short notice. Not too sure I agree that it would have taken away fro...

Re: The Defiant in The Way of the Warrior
Why would the Klingons destroy a non-combatant ship that can be potentially captured ? Not to mention attacking a docked and helpless Defiant is hardly fitting for Klingon and their 'code' bullshit. As for not using it, the ship got wrecked and would only be a liability in a fight like that. The De...

The Defiant in The Way of the Warrior
Something that has bugged me for a while, and something I've not been able to find out... What was the Defiant doing when the Klingons attacked DS9 in The Way of the Warrior? We see the ship dock at the station with the Klingon fleet waiting to attack, but then we don't see it any further. Even in a...

Re: Defending the Federation(RAR)
For me, the second priority is to try and overcome the speed advantage that the Imp fleet has. One way to try and counteract it is to research ways to detect ships in hyperspace, and find a way of working out their course. If this can be done it might be possible to have ships waiting to meet them ...

Re: Defending the Federation(RAR)
Hi all - first post here, although I've been browsing the site for a few months now. In response to the scenario, obviously the priority is to close the wormhole if possible. If the wormhole cannot be closed then it's just a question of how bad you are going to get beat. I've often thought about how...
