And if one really wishes to be pedantic, the use of terms like parsecs, which is based on the earth's orbit around the sun, require an earth-centric perspective. Well, somehow I doubt they speak English in a galaxy far, far away either, so it was obviously translated by the filmmakers, who almost c...

Maybe it shunts a certain diameter to hyperspace, and usually the proximity to massive bodies and/or lack of some sort of time dilators ala Saxton tends to destroy the material, or leave targets stranded in hyperspace. That's just trying to match the description though. The name thermal detonator te...

Palpatine and David Brin: Busom Buddies? (Spoilers)

On Mike's hatemail page, http://www.stardestroyer.net/Empire/HateMail/Brin.html , he discusses an essay by David Brin. The essay concerns itself with the morality and politics of star wars and star trek. Has anyone else noticed (with amusement) the similarities between Brin's critisisms of the Jedi ...

It could have happened a million years ago or a million years from now. A long time ago :P But it's never established WHEN the story is being told. "A long time ago" in the year 3000 is different than "A long time ago" now. That's how I've come to interpret it also. Star Wars is...

It really plays to Pournelle's strengths too. The CoDominium universe prior to the introduction of the Moties is very much an expression of Pournelle's views on political science, which is what he has his doctorate in, along with psychology. Niven's talent is in coming up with bizarre as hell aliens...

Looks like "Earth that Was" isn't synonamous with "Earth that Ain't" It could be a prologue or flashback. Yeah, but the whole line about earth being used up makes me think it is just uninhabitable now. Might be neat to see it isn't any good for decent folk, but acts as home for ...

Depending on the tim...

It could well be that the US completed Manifest Destiny, but that the spanish elements were junior partners to begin with, and were just reduced to even less importance after the Sino-American alliance formed.

It doesn't have to be one or the other, it can be one then the other.
