Re: External hard drive suicide
You wrote that you had tested other power cable but did you have another power brick to test with too? 500g WD Elements (grey enclosure, svideoish power connector) had problem with easily broken power bricks. I had to open couple of 500g enclosures and if the internals are similar opening yours shou...

Unarmed service numbers (2003) 56 and (2006) 38 (source Ruotuväki ) In comparison wiki claims 27000 conscripts/year trained. Only 4 or 5 per day? How do you live on that, exactly? HDD controller drivers? If you do not have custom (for that laptop) XP cd, it might not have correct driver for your HDD controller. And since I really doubt that it has floppy drive (curses for XP not being able to get drivers from USB at install...), you will need to make custom XP cd. If that is ...

I'm also recommending backup + nuke, just make sure to scan your backups. F-Secure has similar Rescue CD that Crayz posted (Thanks), but it only uses their scanning engine and doesn't have anything else. F-Sec Rescue CD You could try to run online scanner, like this F-Sec one. (Win 32bit, IE, JS, Ac...

As an alternative to external HDD case, I have found this a extremely useful: Kama Connect.
USB adapter for one SATA and one ATA device. Doesn't have case for HDD but very nice for temporary file transfers. Works with both 2.5/3.5" and optical drives.
