HOW are we going to "pressure" China to clean up its act? The people in charge there don't seem to give a fuck about dangerous products or poisonous food for their own, much less anyone else. Given a choice between barring trade in poisonous food and dangerous goods and a world wide depre...

The whistle about all of this was essentially blown by the NZ government, after the NZ dairy company Fonterra, which has a 43% stake in the Chinese dairy company SanLu, came to them with their concerns. Fonterra had tried to alert local authorities in China when it found out SanLu's products were co...

Day cares must be a lot different in New Zealand, but, in my experience (having worked in day care here in the USA and also investigated a few back when I considered working) they are not havens of stimulation. When I was about 15-16, my mother worked for Barnardos, a childcare agency that would in...

As I said, your post is there for everyone to see, and if you really need to believe that what you wrote was a fine example of clarity of thought and communication, go ahead. But you're not going to win any points with me by trying to portray yourself as the hapless victim of a politically correct ...

I think it's obvious that stay at home moms are going to be a little more stressed than moms who work. Let's face it; when your kids are in day care, someone else is dealing with the tantrums, the diaper changes, the feeding, the teaching, etc. These are stressful parts of being a mom. But I don't ...

Frankly, attitudes like yours are insulting and demeaning to all stay-at-home fathers. With no evidence whatsoever, you assume that a stay-at-home father is inadequate or ill-prepared, doing a job that he's ill-suited for and will necessarily be inferior to a woman. I was a stay-at-home father for ...

This is not what DM is arguing at all. As he pointed out in his first post, if both parent co-operates with his or her evolutionary role, the family structure will generally be more efficient. If you have a family with a mother that "house-wives" and a father that brings home the money, t...

Kids do benefit from having two parents, but one parent ideally has to be the "go to" parent. One parent has to think of parenting as the primary job, rather than something he does after his primary job. Especially if anything goes wrong, or there is any problem to be dealt with. People w...

I dont think you've got any credibility arguing that your original claim was unamgibuous, it's there for people to read. You basically start off by saying "Look everyone, I'm going to make a big controversial claim!", then start talking about "everyone", and moderating the claim...

That assumes that the working mother isnt able to store breast milk for the father to feed the child, and breastfeed the child during off-work hours. And there's no indication that I can see that a combinaiton of formula and breast milk will result in the child missing out on the benefits of breast...

So it's more "If a particular couple is willing to do it, that family will probably be better off"? That's what I said in the first place. It's not my fault that you've got your ideological back up and are running around claiming that you can't understand a simple statement that even &quo...

Since when can stay-at-home fathers reliably provide breastmilk for a baby in the first year? What? Never? I wonder if there are any advantages to breastfeeding? There we go! So for the record, your argument can essentially be summarised as this: "If everyone wanted to specialise according to traditional gender roles, everyone would be better off if they specialised according to traditional gender roles." That's a bit like me saying "If the sky were red, ...

That's why I used the word "if" to describe a conditional, as in "conditional upon both people actually wanting to do this", which I even took pains to repeat and elaborate on later on in my message in case someone didn't get it. Should I have spelled it out in crayon, in order ...

Is it possible that we're confusing cause and effect here? Perhaps being wealthy causes men to have traditional views of gender relationships, and not the other way around. I mean, if you're spending huge amounts of your time accumulating excessive wealth, you probably like the feeling of being bet...

The evidence doesnt seem to back that up. While every relationship is different, certain attitudes tend to be correlated with one another, and it seems that more traditional views of marriage and gender roles tend to be associated with decreased sexual satisfaction and overall happiness in the rela...

OK, I'm going to throw away the political correctness here and be honest: if everyone concerned is willing to accept traditional gender roles, they work out better for everyone. The guy makes the money, the girl raises the kids and takes care of the house. The evidence doesnt seem to back that up. ...

Well, technically the hops are a preservative to delay the transformation of the beer into vinegar, but some people apparently like it. I generally go for low-hop beers myself, and I prefer wine (which has its own issues: lots of people hate dry wines, for instance). Funnily enough, I love vinegar....

Most of the people posting here about beer probably haven't even tried real beer. If it's from the U.S., and from one of the major brewers, you're drinking light beer at best. I wouldn't call it the nectar of the gods either, but a good beer can be a worthwhile drink, once you've acquired the taste...

Scarlett Johansson. A significant number of people seem to think she's spectacularly beautiful. I mean, she's not ugly - though she does remind me of a fish sometimes for some reason, but the fanaticism I see about her just doesnt seem warranted. South Park. A couple questions that are knawing at me. 1. First off, would it not be relatively accurate to say that the chances of actually jumping into a sun or planet or some other major stellar phenomeon off a blind jump would be far less than they seem to suggest in nBSG? Indeed, I would agree that doing ...
