Re: The US Election 2016

Its the party choosing who it wants to represent it in the actual election for the office, it'd make sense that only members of the party can vote, otherwise it'd just be a very slow runoff style election, which admittedly might not be a bad thing. We also tend to be a bit...over-fond of elections f...

Re: Removing a Planetary Atmosphere

So, somebody check my math here, all number from wiki-- Atmospheric mass is 5.15x10 18 kg escape velocity from the surface of earth is 11.2 km/s. So the kinetic energy required to remove earths atmosphere, assuming it all started at the surface, would then just be escape velocity squared, times half...

Re: Mass Shooting At Black Church In South Carolina

So apparently this is a thing: The article is about how the US military has no plans to change them, but how the fuck did they get named that way in the first place? Southern apologist propaganda, plus the US Army had some initial respect for Confederate military leadership throughout the war. Many...

It looks like he's applying the standard "its all about those darn dirty illegal immigrant criminals flooding our borders" argument. Ignore the numbers showing other countries take more per capita than the US.

Re: Oklahoma approves Nitrogen Executions

As I understand it, its less about "changing the law" and more about changing the ethics code requirements of a nationwide organization of medical professionals, and the individual doctors/pharmacists/etc themselves. I believe that's from an old thread here though, so grain of salt.

Re: DS Barry to be recycled

Not sure how true it is, but I'd heard another issue is that the USN is in a bit of a "now or never" situation with USS Barry, as there may be a new or replacement bridge going up that won't be tall enough for her to sail under intact, nor have a sufficient drawbridge section (I THINK it m...

Re: This Warhammer: End Times thing (novel/setting spoilers)

Barriers to entry wise, the fact that you can't really get a game of fantasy at a lot of places that are more tourney focused under 2400 points for beans doesn't help, plus the near requirement for at least one huge block, and WHFB's also started to drop below the critical "its everywhere and w...

It probably will still do it fired from a pistol, even without the green tip ammo. IIRC, most police vests are class II or class IIIa (anything heavier than this is rigid, non-concealable hard plate armor). Class II is defined as what will stop 9mm Luger reliably. From here , 223 in a 7" barrel...

For the first, it depends on expected relative speeds, expected internal compartmentalization and size, and how small a bomb you can make I'd think. Back-of-the-envelope using Galilean physics says about ~7x10 6 m/s is the turnover point where even theoretically perfect fusion bombs will have less e...

Re: More conservative German tank designs in WWII (RAR!)

Lend lease did do some--Wiki notes things like an entire tire factory shipped over, as well as something like 24% of all Russian machine tools by 1945 being US made. That said, IIRC the US and Germany were more important in setting up industry in the USSR pre-war--for example, the ZiS trucks that ma...

Possible comlication on that Coffee: ".22 revolver" makes me think it might be this gun. No trigger guard (though it is single action, meaning something or somebody would have to pull the hammer back before it would fire), so if the gun was caught on something, causing issues with bra fit,...

Yep, those are LEDs. As to why they're arranged that way...produces a meets the required amount of light without wasting LEDs or looking weird, and looks distinctive for the manufacturer, 5 pointed stars being a fairly common generic shape. The size of Talbott doesn't bother me so much, since it's explicitly twice the volume of space as Silesia, with far fewer inhabited systems. Also note that nothing to the Galactic "south" of the League, or much to the sides, is shown. I may be being led astray by the fact they fully close...

I agree it seems like a bit of a spiteful dick move. Re: The german wehrmacht in Modern America (RAR!)

As far as penetration 7.92x57mm Mauser is equivalent to 7.62x51 OTAN and 7.62x54R. It is going to go through most body armor as if it were not there. And 7.62x33 (the stuff used for the StG 44) is basically equivalent to a slightly worse version of 7.62x39mm. As in the round used for the AKM. So th...

Re: Broomstick Visits A Gun Store

Actually, the Mosin and the 303 are broadly comparable, and in about the same class as the .30-06, and the .308 winchester. 7.62x54R is on wiki as 2600 ft-lbs of muzzle energy in a 28 in barrel, .303 is 2400-2500 in 24, and both shoot roughly comparable sized bullets. That said, stock SMLE is only a...

Pretty impressive for something smaller than a .22LR. Simon, you'd know this better than me--would 2 km/s be getting up into whipple sheild/blows apart on contact territory? Checking Atomic rockets, its about half its mass in TNT in kinetic energy, so it may just cause such a big hydraulic shock, or...

Problem with that is Honors standard duelling pistol, IIRC is a .45 acp. Sure, only takes a level II vest to stop, and not as penetrating as 9mm, but still fairly powerful and penetrating. Plus I'd think a light, presumably small diameter/high velocity pulser round would be more penetrating (more en...

Interestingly, those increased regulations they're talking about on diesel (EU Stage III/IV, which are similar to, but not the same as, the most recent EPA Tier 4 standards) have actually been being brought in slowly since about 2006-7. Things like this though probably explains why the EU standards ...
