Re: Math: probability of rolling one of each using 6-sided d

How do you calculate how many dice you need to roll before the probability threshold of rolling one of each side is reached? For example, how many 6-sided dice do one need to roll before the probability is >50% of rolling each of 1 through to 6? Then >75%? My gut feeling is around 13 and 20 respect...

Re: Is the death penalty moral/ethical?

No, I don't. I never said I support the death penalty in First World nations . Moreover, most of the threads implicitly center the debate about First World nations, but forget about all the other places in the world. I'm not a First World citizen, and my views on the death penalty mostly apply to S...

Re: Is the death penalty moral/ethical?

You're still assuming the death penalty has any measurable effect in First World nations at all. I'm not. The effect is and should be in my view neglible in the First World, for other factors have already decreased the crime rate to a great extent; measuring this effect due to this is hard on it's ...

Re: Can someone explain Battlestar Galactica to a COMPLETE newco

Sharon Athena participated in the genocide of the colonies as I understood. Her post-genocidal sympathies aren't much of a redeeming factor. Yeah, they do make the character more interesting to follow, and quite so. It might be though that this copy of Eight is not occupying a leadership position i...

Re: Is the death penalty moral/ethical?

Neither am I going to say that with the rather low crime rates present in First World nations the impact of death penalty is anything but a very marginal influence on crime, because that is true - the overall better economic position has reduced crime rates to sizes where the impact would not be se...

Stas, it would be really helpful if you could tell me how far you've seen. I've got a feeling I could dispense with most of the spoiler tags, but I don't want to accidentally, well, spoil you. What happens later doesn't mean a parole for past actions of such magnitude. Even if they save these 40,000...

Re: Is the death penalty moral/ethical?

If the person is not a psychopath but a criminal who is considered sane, capital punishment serves as a deterrent to all those in their own mind who might commit such crimes. The potential deterrence factor is higher than actual deterrence, and it's hard to estimate, but considering that really hei...

Re: Can someone explain Battlestar Galactica to a COMPLETE newco

so if you accept the latter view, the first Cylon war can be seen as more of a slave rebellion. Obviously, this doesn't justify the attack on the colonies decades later, but it casts it in a different light: instead of killing for the sake of it, it's violent blowback for the enslavement. I've yet ...

Re: Russia cuts European oil supply

If every year or so the public at large has to worry about their source for warmth because a nation has a quarrel with another, a quarrel entirely unrelated to the rest of the EU, then the pressure to do something about it will grow. The gas shortage didn't hit Finland back then nor now, but there ...

Re: Russia cuts European oil supply

This whole incident, which has been all over the news here in Finland, might have the effect of almost forcing the EU into considering other sources for energy than Russian gas. Definitely. When a minor contract spat with one country cuts off half the Union, it's time to reconsider energy policies....

What evidence would it take to prove your beliefs wrong? I simply will not reply to challenges that do not address this question. Refutability is one of the classic determinants of whether a theory can be called scientific. Moreover, I have found it to be a great general-purpose cut-through-the-cra...

Re: Did Bush make the US unpopular?

As far as I am concerned, the US has NEVER been popular with foreigners during my lifetime. Even before Bush people would always be complaining of 'Americanisation' and all that crap. Bush has just been the latest instalment in the international Anti-America whine-fest. Actually, in 1999/2000 83% o...
