Can I make MP3 files?

Post by Dorenn Stark »

Ok, my situation is this: I want to get an Ipod, and I have a rather large CD collection. As I don't want to buy each song again for use in an Ipod, is it possible to turn my regular CD songs into MP3 which I could then stick into an Ipod? Is this at all possible?

iTunes. It makes ripping CDs to the iPod a snap.

(In fact, before the Apple Music Store, ripping songs from CDs was they ONLY way to get songs into the iPod!)

There are a host of methods of ripping to mp3. My prefered version is my Winamp Pro edition I have thanks to its support for Track ID plus ripping at any speed+format.

Quick note, 128k is the standard quality size for most mp3s. The higher the size the better it sounds but the more space it takes up. Don't go lower than 128k because it sounds like crap. I prefer 256k or 512k but radios and pod-casts sound fine in 128k

Windows Media Player has some support for ripping .mp3 files from CDs, but it seems to be hit or miss for me - I could get some tracks from the Homeworld and Lord of the Dance discs just fine, but for some reason, my GTA: Vice City V-Rock CD wouldn't let me get some of the tracks, so I had to do a manual rip using Goldwave.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.

I used to generally use 160K, or 128K-160K VBR.

just like to point out that ipods don't use mp3's. they use .mp4 or AAC.

so erm.. Itunes still does the trick. but you'd feel silly if you ripped everything into mp3 format only for it too tell you it doesn't work

^^ I'm confused also, the ads and people I talk to all said it was MP3.

You smoking something?
Audio support MP3 (8 to 320 Kbps), MP3 VBR, AAC (8 to 320 Kbps), Protected AAC (from iTunes Music Store, M4A, M4B, M4P), Audible (formats 2, 3, and 4) and WAV
Taken straight from here.

You can also try cdex, a free utility that can rip cd's to MP3.

I use audiograbber. If you decide to use it you have to remember to get the LAME DLL if you want to use it for MP3s.

EAC is god. Well... not really, but it's very good. Also need to get the LAME encoder. My Lord of the Rings soundtracks sounded pretty horrible when ripped using iTunes(weird clicks in most of the tracks), but sound perfectly fine now.
