LST 325 pictures

Post by Glocksman »

During WW2, 167 LST's were built here at the Evansville Shipyard, which was the largest employer in the area at the time.

To commeorate this, when the USS LST Ship Memorial was looking for a permanent home for LST 325, the Mayor and a group of local citizens thought Evansville would be a good place.
Naturally, Evansville wouldn't be Evansville without some self-serving double dealing on the part of the politicians. :x
It 'just happens' that the 'ideal' site for the memorial was at Marina Pointe, a private dock on the river that is owned by the husband of Gail Riecken, a very prominent figure in local politics.

Anyway $3 million later, we have a docking facility in place.
Here's some pictures of the ship.

"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."- General Sir Charles Napier

Very cool. If you ever get a chance to visit the SF Bay Area we have the USS Hornet, a liberty ship, and a WW2 sub to visit.

The Greeks let the condition of the ship go to hell.

Is that a barge moored between the two pylons to serve as the boarding platform?

Yes it is.
