by compound, I mean curves which curve in more than one direction:

Examples of compound curves below

Probably one of two options, assuming gmax still has all the modeling features of 3dsmax:

1) Build a low poly shape + meshsmooth.

2) Build a spline cage using the profile views, then use the surface modifier.

That's assuming you're talking about a compound curved surface. If you mean a 2d line, I have no clue... you should be able to curve it in 3 dimensions just fine (use nurbs curves if you have to), if you can't the feature has been removed from gmax.

If you want only a curve you simply create a spline, go to vertex sub object level, select your vertices, rightclick one of them and transform them into beziers or bezier corners.

If you want to model the train build the model with mesh smooth like suggested by Peregrine.

Since you didn´t know how to answer these questions yourself i suggest you start with something easier because you´ll most likely not manage to model a train and you´ll be frustrated. Start with Tables, Chairs, Cel Phones and crap like that.

Forget spline cages and NURBS.
