Ok, don't get the v Mormons bit other than it's a SLC local news channel but...
Anyway, this shits been around for atleast twenty years. When I was a kid, they were called New Wave. They were over emotional, dark brooding teenagers. Oddly enough, they wore black clothes, the guys dressed kind of femmie, and even dark eye makeup.
Emo is just the new name for an old problem of overly emotional teenagers. Not that some aren't troubled and need help, but it's hardly some sort of new thing.
Shit, I wasn't even away of the term 'emo' till a couple/six months ago, but I sure as shit recognise the dark/brooding teen mold.

They say, "the tree of liberty must be watered with the blood of tyrants and patriots." I suppose it never occurred to them that they are the tyrants, not the patriots. Those weapons are not being used to fight some kind of tyranny; they are bringing them to an event where people are getting together to talk. -Mike Wong
But as far as board culture in general, I do think that young male overaggression is a contributing factor to the general atmosphere of hostility. It's not SOS and the Mess throwing hand grenades all over the forum- Red

When I was in high school just a few years ago, the big rebellious teen subculture was goth. I didn't even hear about "emo" until about last year. But it's still just a new twist on the same old crap.
Not that I'm a fan of Spider-Man 3 at all, but isn't it going too far to say that it's emo? Sure, Spider-Man is angsty, and everyone made fun of Peter's "bad boy" haircut, but I didn't think Peter was really emo.

Emo is specifically a fairly recent genre of hardcore punk music, that is also tied into the modern "depressio" look.Knife wrote: Ok, don't get the v Mormons bit other than it's a SLC local news channel but...

Yup, already seen the media hook onto this a few months ago. This video goes into a little better depth and makes better mention of certain elements of the scene.

What a terrible, dystopian future that would be. Ugh.Stark wrote:Is emo the latest version of the 'calculated indifference' the wealthy young men of the 17th century liked to cultivate? Imagine that - in a hundred years, galleries full of suicidegirls and myspace.
This whole "emo" thing is pretty ridiculous, but even I could tell that a few of those clips and soundbites were from things that make fun of Emos, not from 'pro-emo' material or whatever you'd call it. It's always pretty funny to see them taking a "Incisive Look" at something at then coming up with spoofs and parodies of it instead of good examples.
If it does end up in a glass box some where, the earlier the better. They aren't emotional at all, they're depressive. If they had emotions, which means a wide range of 'em, they'd realize that it's way too boring to sit around all day. Emos are not artists. They look like, at best, they'd dabble in cruddy black and white photography with some photoshopping.
It's so bizzare. The idea of it as a music-related movement seems to make no sense. How can you have such a violently angry type of music, with such a passive and depressive act?
Or, is that emo at all? Ugh. All I know is from what my little brothers tell me. They're right about the "Nobody over 25" sort of thing though.

... at obnoxious angles, yeah, or if the camera is in color, then they'll move it quickly so that they have these long exposure lines.Covenant wrote:They look like, at best, they'd dabble in cruddy black and white photography with some photoshopping.
Look at it this way; if a little girl screams at her parents at the top of her lungs because they won't let her go outside, then storms upstairs and sobs into her pillow, "violent" would not be the first adjective to enter your mind. Emos are about as threatening as small girls. It's so bizzare. The idea of it as a music-related movement seems to make no sense. Personally I find it bizarre that people are classifying something as a new genre of music when the only thing they really do is make sure specific words and imagery gets in their songs. It's not like it's as clear cut as between metal and rap. Or even nu-metal and butt rock.Covenant wrote:

"It's you Americans. There's something about nipples you hate. If this were Germany, we'd be romping around naked on the stage here."
You know those crazy portraits of guys in blouses and silly hats staring wistfully off to the side like they're McGann? Apparently this was not just a painting thing, the hip trendsters of the time really did try to capture that attitude and look as part of being 'cool'. Trendy noblemen of hundreds of years ago had all this going on already.TithonusSyndrome wrote:Vass is dis "calculated indiference"?

Welll put. I was going to say something simular in response to Spankies post up the page a bit. They may have a 'type' of music assosiated with 'emo' but the tone and mood of that music, let alone the message, doesn't sound that much different to me than the 'gothic' before it, or the 'new wave' back in my early days.General Zod wrote:
