First vinyl: Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, I think, followed by a smorgasbord from the Columbia House Music club. Still have 30 or so of them.

First cassette? Shit, I dunno, but I think it was my own recorded-from-radio broadcast mix. I still have a dozen cassettes floating around here.

First CD? Beats the shit out of me...I guess that's age for you. I've had a CD player for 20 years.

Think it was Hybrid Theory by Linkin Park, but I'm not sure if I actually used my own money there. Probably not since I was in Middle School at the time. Anyhow, it was the first album that didn't belong to my mother, or was an unexpected gift from someone else. With the exception of the one that I had inadvertently stolen, by borrowing it from a friend and never giving it back.

I got Hybrid Theory because the design on the cover reminded me of that on a CD I'd heard before. I had liked the sound but couldn't remember any of the words. Still not entirely sure if that was it, but I liked it enough that it doesn't matter.

The first album that I am certain I bought with my own money was Mutter by Rammstein, which I got sometime last year. It was going for $10 so I couldn't resist.

Broomstick wrote:Honestly, I can't remember my first album purchase. However, I am positive it was on vinyl as I pre-date the CD by considerable years and it may have even been before cassette tapes were a common item (never bought many of those anyhow).
Hell, Broomstick, I was listening to my dad's 8-tracks on a stereo that also played 78s!

My first album I bought was Michael Jackson's Triller, on Vinyl. My first Cassette was Alabama Mountain Music. My first CD was also one of Alabama's, as I collected each album as it came out .

I'm old enough to remember seeing 8-tracks, but if my parents ever owned any, I don't remember.

I forgot, I bought Pearl Jam's Vitalogy on vinyl when it came out in 1994. That would be the first record I ever bought. I never actually listened to it, however, as I didn't have a turntable then and pretty much bought it for what I perceived as collectible value at the time. Of course, I was a lot more into Pearl Jam back then, probably because one of my good friends was always listening to them. Suffice to say, I have no Pearl Jam on my iPhone/iPod, save a few tracks from Ten. Of those, I don't think I've listened to them in years. I kind of lost interest, as my collection stopped with Vitalogy. I don't even have it here. It's somewhere in storage.

The first vinyl I ever bought was a local band from Rhode Island that nobody hear has ever heard of, I'd imagine.
The first cassette tape I ever bought was Appalachian Stomp, a bluegrass compilation.
The first CD I ever bought was ... hmm, it was either Bob Dylan's Highway 61 Revisited or Iggy Pop's Raw Power. I don't quite recall, in all honesty.
The first MP3 I ever payed for was a friend of mine's band (Shaimus). The first MP3 I ever downloaded (before the one I payed for ... heh) was, if I remember right, Motorhead's No Sleep 'Till Hammersmith.

Your old.

That said the first album I ever bought was the self titled La Roux, and that was today.

interestingly enough, I bought my first CD before my first cassette.

Natalie Imbruglia Torn for the first, Mission Impossible for the second.

Cant quite remember if I ever bought any music on casettes and the memory for first CD is also a bit vague. I think it was a bundle of albums from Amorphis that included the following: The Karelian Isthmus, Privilege Of Evil, Tales From The Thousand Lakes and it might have had the following Samael CDs Ceremony Of Opposites and Passage.
