Help with tools for recording video from a webcam

I'm looking for a program that will allow me to record video from my webcam. Does anybody know of a good free program for this that exports into an easy to view format? If there are no free ones does anybody know of a good program period to do this?

VLC will do this. Simply choose 'Convert/Save' from the 'Media' dropdown menu, select the 'Capture Device' tab, and under the video and audio device selection section you can select the capture device (be it a webcam, TV tuner, microphone or other such device).

I thought I had it, I can get video from my webcam to VLC Player, but saving it isn't working. I can get the audio to save, but not the video.

Hmm. For what it is worth, it works fine for me in both Windows XP and Ubuntu, although initially playback seems choppy for the first few seconds in Windows, probably as the webcam initalises.

I can get the video to show, but when I try to record the output from my webcam to a file it only saves the sound.
