Okay, our CVS server at work is named "Unicron." We didn't install a GUI or anything we didn't need (we compiled every part of the installation and left out anything in the kernel that was unnecessary). So the machine is just a console, no GUI.
But we found this incredibly cool patch for the kernel that would allow for bootsplash images. Basically, instead of a stark, black background, the bootsplash patch draws a JPEG (we also modified the console resolution to accommodate our background). The bootsplash patch can be found here, and a forum thread on the necessary procedures can be found here. It is absolutely necessary that the JPEG to be used have a resolution 48 ppi by 48 ppi.
So we found this really cool Unicron desktop wallpaper, but it had a bunch of crap on it, like a watermark and a Unicron quote that just was not put in there very competently. I took out the watermark, quote and put in a custom "Powered by Gentoo" logo. Here it is. Link.
