"One Word" - Conjure One
"Your Love Will Kill Me" - Daniel Lavoie (for HoND)
"Fairy Tale" - Shaaman

There are more I like, but these are truly good.
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

The song is great. How it was butchered by MySpace kiddies is irrelevant.
Unfortunately, it is relevant. The song is kinda catchy and otherwise not too objectionable, but I just can't make out to a song that's going to make me see that fat kid dancing every time I close my eyes.

I have a thing for love songs with a tragic or sad element, so don't expect anything you can make-out to, or be the theme for a relationship.

Maná - En el Muelle de San Blas (about a woman who spends most of her natural life at the docks, waiting for her lover to come back)

The Police - Don't Stand So Close To Me '86 (a schoolgirl falls in love with her teacher, and he with her)

The Police - Every Little Thing She Does is Magic (boy has crush on chick, doesn't have the nerve to tell her)

Bare Naked Ladies - I'll Be That Girl (I have no fucking clue)

Bare Naked Ladies - In the Car (a couple's last time together)

Mecano - Cruz de Navajas (the main character meets a grisly death at the end)

Carlos Vives - Alicia Adorada (about a dead lover)

Stabbing Westward - What Do I Have to Do? (unrequited love, awesome last lines)

The Cranberries - Promises (about a failed relationship)
Note: the song's actual video has about as much to do with the lyrics as Naruto does. It's pretty good, except for the cheesy sound effects that get old after a couple of viewings.

Phantom of the Opera (do I really need to explain this?)
Sarah Brightman and Steve Harley version (classic)
Techno version (my favourite, video contains spoilers for Magnetic Rose)
Nightwish version (second favourite)

Honourable mention to a couple cool non-tragic love songs that I've been listening to recently:

Belanova - Hoy the Amo

Gym Class Heroes - Cupid's Chokehold (it's a cheesy song, but it's also has a certain quirkiness that I like about it)
Note: the video version sucks

And some honourable mentions to all (most?) love songs, tragic or not (most of them not), by the following bands/singers:
Sentimiento Muerto, Shakira, Carlos Vives, The Police, The Beatles, Bare Naked Ladies, Mecano, Aerosmith, Queen, and others.

BTW - Spanish is better at love songs than English. It's also better at songs about women, whether they be beautiful, virtuous, someone's love, or just pure evil.

"Sweet Child O' Mine" by Guns n' Roses comes to mind along with "Walking on the Moon" by The Police. "November Rain" by GnR works is pretty good too even though it doesn't exactly have a happy ending. Then there's "Ice Cream" by Sarah McLachlan, but I think that's pushing it a bit.

"One Hot Mama" by Trace Adkins

And the video is just as funny.

I was waiting for someone to pick that up :D

It's still a good song and it is (IIRC the lyrical translation) a love song. If the girlfriend hasn't seen the Numa Numa video then it's good to go, especially if she doesn't understand Romanian as then you can just make some bullshit up about the lyrics.

As a matter of fact, "the girlfriend" has seen the Numa Numa video because she does not live under a rock. She would have a tough time not picturing the spectacularly unattractive Gary Brolsma while hearing that song.

Also, it's catchy and insidious, and she would get it stuck in her head for weeks and probably annoy all her friends by singing it and getting it stuck in their heads as well.
She Got A Way - Billy Joel
Lullabye - Billy Joel
All About Soul - Billy Joel
Augh! How could I have forgotten Billy Joel? I should be punished for that.
Into Her Arms-Nick Cave and the bad Seeds
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds have sung love songs? Huh. I definitely didn't know that. I've always thought of them as a little bit twisted, lyrically speaking.
I can't figure out why I forgot Van Morrison

as "Gloria" and "Brown Eyed Girl" have always been favorites of mine.
Brown Eyed Girl is another one I forgot. That's an excellent song.
"Storybook Love (from 'The Princess Bride'), Mark Knopfler
You know, I love the movie but I don't know the song. I'll look it up sometime when I'm on my own computer.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. Yes, it's a song about the giddy walking on air, or in this case, walking on the moon feeling of being in love.

How can you not like this? It's pure Moldavian genius.

And I piss on the idiots who butchered this song in their shitty Youtube videos. Piss on them from great height, with anger in my...aim...or something.

I'm not sure if this fits your criteria but for something more up tempo with a rock feel to it: "Addicted to Love" and "Simply Irresistable" by Robert Palmer.

Huey Lewis and the News have a couple ones that would work like that as well, though I can't remember the titles offhand.
The Gentleman from Texas abstains. Discourteously.

How can it be that nobody has mentioned Everybody Needs Somebody To Love by the Blues Brothers yet? I mean, come on. Honestly. I frown on your song mentioning punctuality.

In My Life- The Beatles

Brown Eyed Girl- Van Morrison and Jimmy Buffet- Come Monday are pretty good as well.

If you want to stretch "love song," you could also go with Yesterday- The Beatles or Tangerine- Led Zeppelin.
