I had a quick attempt at cutting in the MHD piping and it was a bit of a pain. As you rightly point out it would be best to route it around the edge of the outer casing, but shaping the intakes is tough. I'll try again in a slightly different location and see how it looks.
I thought the main issue with MHD drives was the power requirements being so high, rather than the overall inefficiency of the system. The only real benefit of the drive system is the near total lack of moving parts, theoretically making it extremely reliable. Assuming we had a super reactor we'd still need to make it faster and quieter too.
