The other day a guy at work put on a piece that consisted only of keygen music. I don´t know what it was called, though.

I am going to suggest Boccherini - some of the best, if not the best chello music I have ever heard. What is even better is that there are so many different interpretations of his stuff. See for example his musica notturna delle strade di Madrid:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7p94DFyBBwc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p0f-rQV--jU
Listen to both for at least six minutes before you pass judgement. If it is not for you, then it is not.

Endtroducing is a really amazing album. His recent The Less You Know, The Better is also very good, though not on that level. I kind of expected that Slime has probably heard of Shadow though.TronPaul wrote:I would suggest DJ Shadow.

okay so i mentioned Frank Ocean, right?
there were two RnB artists to come out this year and i think they are both amazing
one is ocean, the other is The Weeknd (out of Toronto)
both put out free releases this year
i already mentioned Nostalgia,ULTRA by Ocean
for The Weeknd, you have the amazing album House of Balloons, the pretty good EP Thursday and he has a third mixtape coming out sometime Fall 11 (i guess he means before dec 22 lol) called Echoes of Silence
Pitchfork contrasts them pretty well: "The Weeknd make music about giving into the high, reveling in the depravity, willingly becoming the skeezy guy in the back of the club telling girls he's got an eightball back at his crib. Ocean, on the other hand, is the guy who's high but who wishes he weren't, who mentally catalogs all the constructive stuff he's going to do when whatever he's on wears off."
I dunno about skeezy, it never comes off that way, but otherwise I'd mostly agree.

Jorane and Sarah Slean wrote this song for a CBC special. Sarah's best known for her solo work but she does a bunch of collaborations and arrangements as well.*

Junkhouse doing a depressing song about homeless people. It's from about 15 years ago when I was still in high school.
Yes, that's Sarah McLachlan on background vocals.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljN8TM3nVis
And more depressing music, this time by Tristania. <br>One of the few times when Vibeke sings the entire song instead of trading vocal parts with the angry death metal dude.

*A long time ago before she started her career, she redid an Our Lady Peace song and sent in the demo tape, and since then OLP has been performing Julia the Sarah Slean way

Finnish music without either cowboy boots or horror masks? Can there be such a thing?

Loreena McKennitt - The Old Ways
koop islands
Just a gigolo - Max Raabe
TECHNOIR -MANIFESTO
Wolfsheim - Blind
Röyksopp - What Else Is There?
Cortex - The Freaks
Busk Margit Jonsson - Pastoral Hymn

Live at Webster Hall New York City Vol.1, 2, 3.
The first four Enigma CDs.
U2's War and The Joshua Tree. Yeah they're still a pop band, but their older stuff is off the radar.
And of course Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 "Ode to Joy," preferably with Leonard Bernstein as conductor.
Poe: Hello and Haunted. Especially the latter one.
EDIT: No musical collection is complete without Denis Leary's Asshole. America Fuck Yeah!

I'd have to recommend Kaizers Orchestra, but I have absolutely no freaking idea where to start. I can't say that there's any song or even collection of songs that actually represents their work well. I'll link a few from a few of their albums and see if any stick. If you're interested in their stuff, I'd say Maestro is their best album.
This is just one of those songs I'll keep listening to for no reason I can properly express:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZkFXnm-RNQ
This is a really good version of one of my favorite songs and also shows just how entertainingly strange their shows can be:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akx9kjV5xXw
This is just a great song, I'm kind of sad that I could only find a live track just because the crisp timing in the studio track fits the shifts in tune really well, I'd say that is worth tracking down if you can.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5z6xvhOxDg
If you want distinctive though, this is really distinctive. It's also weird as could be.

Thank goodness for those few times. The smooth male singing in some of their songs isn't half bad too.aerius wrote:And more depressing music, this time by Tristania.

2 records by Michael Franti come to mind.
Under the name Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy - 'Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury'
And under the name Spearhead - 'Home'.
The former is quite industrial hiphop in places (although there is also a cracking version of California Uber Alles) the other is a lot more mellow.
The first album by Tricky ('Maxinquay') is also a stand out.
More on the guitar side, try the Wedding Present's 'Seamonsters'.
