TLC's song "Unpretty" should be a required video for all health classes.

The idea that you can make girls stop being self-conscious about their appearance seems like pure fantasy to me. At best, you can make them realize that the range of "attractive" is a bit wider than they thought, but you'd have to pretty much wall them off from reality if you want to convince them that appearance doesn't matter. Every study on the subject has shown that good-looking people do better in all aspects of life, even professionally.

Pfft, no one can ever "make" someone stop being self-conscious, but above song would at least help. It at least is a better image than "America's Top Model" but really, that is something for another thread.

Generally speaking, when most people talk about "sell-outs", they're referring to bands altering their sound so they're more accessible, radio-friendly, etc. Whether this actually happens or not is debatable, but the only people I really see disliking any band because they're popular are the "OMG ANARCHY STICK IT TO THE MAN FUCK YEAH" type.

Normal people talk about it that way. And in some cases it's true enough that a band will change their sound or generally change how they are for the sake of commercial appeal. However there are a good many that will cut a band dead for selling more than a dozen homemade albums.

You've never seen a college "music scene" group, have you? There are plenty of people that do it just to be pretentious twats.

It's interesting that this behaviour can sprout up spontaneously without the kind of organized indoctrination machine that most religions employ.
I'd be surprised if the behavior couldn't sprout up spontaneously: after all, if cliqueiness weren't a part of the overall human psyche, how would religions have gotten started before the indoctrination machines were in place?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
