Gun model for Semester Project

So, i´m making a computer game for this semester project. It will be a full conversion mod running on the doom engine. It´ll also have an inovative thingy that i´m not talking about yet, so you can´t steal my ideas ;) . We´ve got a team of several concept artists, modellers and programers and hope that this is going to be a fun game.

It´ll take place in the near future in which sort of an extreme gated community society is spread over the world. The rich folks live in gigantic buildings somewhere in the sky, above the whole smog and the poor folks live on the ground. There is no contact between the two different classes and they develop isolated from each other.

Anyway, the first gun model is finished. It was modeled by one of the modelers, so this isn´t my model. It´s supposed to have a quite modern look without giving the impression of being too futuristic.
Whatcha think?

(I´m just noticing that it lacks these aiming thingies.)

Nice. I'd put a notch above the hammer and a low blade on the front, put two orange or yellow tritium beads either side of the notch and one green on the blade; voila, Trijicon night sights!

Also, the grip appears to be made for a very large hand or to accomodate a very long ammunition round. Looks like a nice modification of the Old West revolver grips hybridized with the general M1911A1 grip shape. Should be comfortable to shoot with hard-kicking loads if you're a big ol' boy. I recommend something like Hogue's grips.

EDIT the second: I also see the trigger guard is a bit narrow on the Z axis (i.e. vertically too short). That may interfere with gloved-hand usage and firing of the gun. I think giving it more depth and lengthening the trigger commensurately would work wonders.

Does it have a slide or fire some form of energy bolt? I'm not seeing a slide (might be just me) nor an ejection port for spent casings.

Oh, and that flat spot on the dustcover is just SCREAMING for a MIL-STD-1913 (aka Picatinny) Rail.

it could fire Caseless rounds, esp. if its futuretastic

Aye, thanks folks. I´ll forward all those tips to the modeler.
Caseles rounds sounds like an option but i´d prefer am ejection port because ejecting cases are a nice effect that you want to see in games.

Even with caseless you want an outlet of some sort as at least some residue will need to be ejected occasionally.

Residue? You mean smoke and stuff like that?

thats what the barrels for, having that stuff come out behind the bullet increases muzzle velocity.

Though there would be some need to extract dud rounds, that wouldn't necessarily be an ejection port though.

We decided on going for an ejection port because empty cases flying out of guns look cool

No mainly for propellant residue which can build up in the chamber and cause issues. Most of the caseless weapons will have a small port that occassionally can have all the accumulated crap blasted out through it.

The basic design is good, but it would better if you added some more details, like a slide release, safety, and vertical grooves on the rear of the slide for easy slingshotting.
Other than that the only problem I can see is the squarish trigger guard. Round it out a bit more on the bottom so its roomier.

Ok, here´s an update:

It´s got sights now, the grip is smaller, the trigger guard is larger, the slide got a new design with an ejection port. The second pic has a before and after update.

@ Captain Tycho: You´re right about the detail, but that is all stuff that will be textured. Gotta keep low on polygons.

Trigger guard is still too small. That thing needs to be well large enough for gloved hands.

So the ejection port is on the left side? Aren't you better off with stuff flying out of your weapon away from you? Or is this a lefty gun?

Lefties don't have special guns. It doesn't matter much which direction the shell casing eject from, because it's far enough away from the shooter that it won't hit them. I think it's 2 part convention and 1 part "Shell casings flying across my field of view is distracting" as to why all pistols tend to eject to the right.

Wrongo, Lefties get guns with safeties on the other side, and often the magazine is ejected from the other side Vs. a Right handed gun (though more modern guns are ambidextrous)

Nice looking gun, reminds me of the Ruger series (which the pistol from HL2 also did). For a game, it's pretty spot on. From a realism stand-point:

1. As pointed out, the trigger guard needs to be bigger. Not just for gloved fingers, but so that you have enough room to quickly get your finger into firing position when drawing it.

2. The handle/grip is too large (from back to front). A person should be able to completely wrap their middle and index finger around the gun for a solid grip. Otherwise the gun is uncomfortable to fire. Note: The fingers don't need to touch your palm, but you should be able to get at least your entire front joint to the other side of the handle.

Imagine holding a 2x4 wood block as a bat with one hand. The fact that your grip is extended out farther makes for a weak hold on the weapon. Contrast this with a real baseball bat, where your hand completely encloses the handle: you can swing it with more force and without fear of it slipping out of your hand.

Just from the modeled hand in the pictures you have provided, I would imagine recoil would be a major issue firing one-handed.

3. The rear-sight needs a notch in the middle so you can line it up with your front-sight.

4. It needs a magazine release button and a slide-release/stop lever so you can leave the action "broken."

5. Pull the trigger back more towards the handle. How far it is out right now makes me think "squirt gun."

I like it. It looks like a fancy 9mm. The real questions is: does it come in black?

The vast majority of guns are ambidextrous. Even such ancient designs as the M1911 are such.

The major exceptions to this that I can think of are target pistols, but those are kinda high-end.

I like the original better. The second version looks like some one modified an H&K for a sci fi movie.

I think the whole trigger area needs reshaping. On modern pistols you can rest your finger on the trigger guard, which is curved to help. This doesn't have anything. Is this done on purpose to increase how fast it can be instinctively drawn?

Also, although I agree that the trigger guard should be made wider, if you like the narrow style, you could stick a hinge on it so it can be swung out for a gloved hand. The fact that the trigger itself is hollow is a bit off. If it was solid like an M1911 it would make it stronger, prevent foreign material from getting inside and take a step out of the machining process.

About the ejector port, I agree it should be on the other side, but more interestingly, its length doesn't match the width of the grip. Perhaps these rounds are using futuristically powerful propellants and the bullet really does make up half the round's length? Also, I don't know why but ejector ports always wrap around towards the top somewhat, as opposed to going straight out the side.

While I like the weird and wonderful slide, the inner tips being serrated is strange. Presumably these'll be smoothed out later.

Most handguns actually have the ejection port on the top and to the right. Spent casings typically fly to the right because most people are right handed.

I suppose however, if you wanted a left handed shooter, he could have a custom made gun to eject them to the left, but most guns are designed to eject to the right.

that ejection port looks sweet! It's gonna look cool when firing in game!
hey, If you ever need a beta tester... :D
