I'm considering buying this model of SMS Brandenburg, and wanted to know whether it's too difficult for a beginner.

I only built plastic models (Revell, Italeri) so far, Brandenburg would be my first paper model.

I've got limited card modeling experience, I have to say that one looks fiendishly difficult.
Not impossible, and perhaps not too much for a skilled and determined beginner, but I would definitely recommend finding replacements for the gun barrels.

It's possible (depending on if the paper is glossy on both sides) to impregnate the cardstock with CA glue on the reverse side of the graphics, achieving a more robust material to work with.

I say go for it, be extra careful and take your time.

Combrig is supposedly talking about releasing a resin 1/700th scale Brandenburg later this year, but they can take some time between leaking info on development and actually releasing a kit...sometimes years.

Thanks - I should probably start with an easier one first.
One thing I will definitely do is make copies of the sheets, just to have some reserve if an accident happens

Oh man, I've got a card 1/48th P-51 that I picked up at a hobby show, 8 years ago. I'm still too scared to even start cutting. It's still sitting in one of my drawers. Every once in awhile I pull it out and then carefully put it away again.

Seconded. I also recommend that you stock up on sharp X-actos or your favorite brand. Many of them. Dull blades are not your friend--you will tear the paper with them. Get hold of a good straightedge too.

Copying is a good idea. Get comfortable with the cutting, folding and gluing before you tackle the big one.
