Whom did that might have been pissed off with his hard drive. Did it keep crashing?

Sounds right. Logic tends to fly the coop when heated emotions are present, so the guy probly got his guns and loaded em with any old bullets he had around (noticing afterward they were hollowpoints), or HPs are all he has...jaeger115 wrote:Whom did that might have been pissed off with his hard drive. <EDIT> Heated emotions does not necessarily mean anger. It could simply be the glee you get when you destroy something and it smashes into millions of pieces with a nice, LOUD Crunch/Smash/Splat/Etc.... LOL
The hard drives were shot to protect data. Although I think thermite would have been more effective...

You don't need FMJ or AP bullets to put a hole through a hard drive. You actually get better energy transfer with JHP when shooting relatively "soft" targets such as a HD. If you really wanted to kill the data, just take the drive apart and run a #5 magnet from Wondermagnet.com over the platters a few times, but it's nowhere near as fun as shooting it.Einhander Sn0m4n wrote:Nice! Why did he use JHP bullets instead of FMJ or AP bullets? LOL

Nah you can still recover the data even after using magnets, with careful time consuming analysis, unless the magnets were really strong, strong enought to warp the disks (if they were made of ferrous materials, which they are not). Then again from the description these are probably strong enough to do that. Anyways I like the idea of using thermite.

Uh, what sort of data warranted hollowpoint rounds?

Its something that all people who work of computers want to do at some point or another, their is no counting how many times I though "gee, I wonder how you would look after beating you mercilessly with an axe mister whir of disk shut down and mister 'blue screen of death'... ahhh, much better...:
If you want to destroy all the data, then just run it beaten to large earth metal magnets and then shoot it several times.

Hydrashoks have a steel post which I believe could have armor-piercing qualities. See where I'm going with this? LOL

Pu, I wonder what sort of data could POSSIBLY be so important to you that you would use thermite to destroy...why not go the whole nine fucking yards and rig a case of C4 to your HD?

Why bother with making thermite when you can get the same effect from magnesium? Most camping or outdoors supply stores sell magnesium blocks for use as firestarters. Put a few blocks on the HD and light it with a propane torch. Don't forget the welding goggles or you'll be seeing spots in your eyes for a long time.
The problem with thermite is that it's a bitch to light, a normal propane torch won't get it started, you need an oxy/acetelyne torch for that. The other way of lighting it is to use a chunck of magnesium, light the mag with a regular torch and have the mag light the thermite off. A model rocket igniter won't light off thermite like that article says.

The other problem is that, unless you're sitting on a bare concrete floor, the thermite will burn through EVERYTHING underneath it. Even concrete, up to a point.aerius wrote:The problem with thermite is that it's a bitch to light, a normal propane torch won't get it started, you need an oxy/acetelyne torch for that. To tell the truth, I certainly wouldn't like a bunch of thermite rigged to a hairtrigger sitting on my computer...

The article said to use the rocket igniter to light the magnesium which would light the thermite. Besides I don't think plain magnesium powder would burn through the hard drive casing well. After all you don't have time to crack the case open.aerius wrote:Why bother with making thermite when you can get the same effect from magnesium? Also thermite is less messy and more easily obtainable than C4. Also I think you want to melt the HDD, not blow it up. And just put the computer on concrete blocks.

Why do you need to melt your computer in the first place? What do you have stored on it?

Plutonium, what's with this obsession of yours with Thermite?
Why not just use a tin of gunpowder and a blasting cap?
And while I don't know how well this would work, what about putting the HD in a self-cleaning oven and setting it to "clean"?
EDIT: I thought of another one. If you have access to construction vehicles (like me), just put the HD on a concrete slab and run over it with a Cat bulldozer.
But honestly, the only kind of information worth physically destroying your hard drive over would be either documents that comprimise national security, or illegal forms of pornography: in which case I'd say you'd deserve to get caught and punnished to the full extent of the law.

People people, hypothetical situations. Besides useful if the US became a police state (though if it was a police state they would kill you anyways just for having encrypted data).
Running it over with a bulldozer is good for the newer HDD, which have glass platters. Otherwise it'll just flatten it and with enough analysis under an EM microscope (extremely costly and unlikely) you can recover bits and pieces.
And spanky, what exactly do you do for a living?
