A friend of mine who works for the DED (something like the German UNICEF) used to have a contract in South Africa and is now working in Uganda. He asked me and a couple of friends to take his car from South Africa to Uganda because he didn´t have enough time. We started in Johannesburg and went up north via Mozambique, Malawi and Tanzania to Kampala / Uganda. The whole tour took us about one and half months and it turned out to be the most awesome thing i´ve ever done.
Before the trip we were somewhat unsure if it might be unsafe or otherwise disturbing but the opposite was true. We encountered the most friendly people, never felt unsafe and saw the most amazing wildlife and cities possible.
The whole trip was spiked with strange and at the same time funny events like persuading a local governor to get into our car because we needed him to tell a guard at a bridge that we can cross the river. Snorkeling in a lake where we saw crocodiles going into the water 200 meters further and camping in the bush under a baboon infested tree.
I am now planning my next trip on which i will go in about a year, after graduating from uni. That tour will go by car from Germany to either Cape Town / South Africa or to Vietnam. I´ve got two other guy who are going to come along and am looking for more people to join. If you´re interested check the second post in this thread.
The route we took
Elephant in the Krueger national park right next to our car.
Awesome architecture in Beira / Mozambique
Local Kids excited by the presence of a camera. One of them started crying out of happiness after seeing herself on the LCD display of the Digicam.
Sunset at beautiful Lake Malawi
Us hanging out in Dar Es Salam with a couple of Bangladeshi friends who live there
Beach on Zanzibar where we went swimming with dolphins
Lion passing our car in the Serengeti
A couple of workers we drank with at the port of Mwanza / Tanzania on the ship on which we crossed Lake Victoria
Stealth bomber. Photographed in Luwero / Uganda
Average house of relatively rich people in Uganda
