No offence, but I've always thought their work (Star Wars, especially Tolkien, etc...) to be rather dated and unbelievibly hideous.

Is that because it isn't anime? :P

No, because it sucks and is amaturish 70s book jacket style art.

You actually think their work is good? Check out how they rendered Gollum or Treebeard to see how terrible they are.

None taken, I didn't paint any of it :)

Their work is quite dated, but I was feeling nostalgic tonight and went looking for the old Star Wars poster.

Besides, there's often a big difference between what I think is good and what I like.

Heh, well, here's a little demonstration of why I dislike them so much.

EXAMPLE: Gollum

Alan Lee (which matches Tolkien's descriptions almost perfectly):

Hildebrandt:

To me, that pretty much says it all.

I like some of their stuff...but I like Dorman better for SW.

I quite like that Carbonite picture, very striking.

This is my favorite classic Star Wars art.

I still like their Star Wars art.

Is it me or does this seem like some sort of art to a biblical story?

Their Magic art is usually pretty cool. Some of their newer stuff isn't as nice, though.

Most of the Tolkien stuff sucks ass, but their SW stuff is pretty good.

THere is only one man who does the best SW art.

Drew Struzen.

*gasp* I actually agree with you 100%, Spanky.

Their art is too colorful, and all the faces they draw look too similar (Rob Liefeld has a similar problem). Plus, I don't like the broad brushstrokes.

I see what you're saying, but after looking at more of the Hildebrant's stuff, I have to say that I still like it, and I think their body of work is better than 'hideous' :) The color schemes they use do border on garish at times, but that is typcial of pulp style art. Their use of color, while broad, is still balanced though, the colors all compliment each other, even if in an opposite way.

Too, from a certain perspective, SW is a serial western set in space, full of archetypes and exaggerations, which makes it an appropriate subject for pulp art.

I like the Hildebrant's sense of composition too. The original SW poster is soooo cool, esp the way Luke's lightsaber 'gleams' in Vader's eye, with the sweep of x-wings, like a swarm of bees.

'Dated' isn't always a bad thing either. Much of their art was painted in the late 70's/early 80's, and shows it. But hell, for that matter, Luke in ANH should be driving a black Trans Am with t-tops and a gold eagle (?) on the hood, ala Smokey and the Bandit

One another note, I thought of using part of the Han in carbonite pic as an av ()

I agree with Spanky.

Their Shadows of The Empire art was just plain terrible. The Needle in Beggar's Canyon looks like some big water-word cave formation, and Guri's some kind of trashy-looking '70s chick, iirc.

I agree, some of their stuff isn't really great. The 9.11 stuff they've done creeps me out, and seems in some strange way, too cheery to me. I can't explain it better than that, they just bug me.

Off topic, but is your avatar Jack from Brazil?

It's the priest guy from The Exorcist. Max van Sydow (sp?) IIRC.

I was looking for men in black one night, and the choice was him, or one of the aliens from Dark City, Mr. Book or Mr. Hand, whatever the main alien's name was.

But Jack is a good idea, may go googling later :)

I see what you mean. That is genuinely creepy.

On a side note, is it just me or do the Hildebrandts really like painting white people?

Check out the pin-up section.

Yeesh, there seems to be something weird about each woman.

Y'know, it kinda makes me feel like's it's an american equivalent to all those weird Bin Laden painted montages done in Afghanistan back then.

...Minus Evil Bert in the background, anyway.
