Soulja Boy Tell Em

I'm officially an old man.

This piece of crap is played on the radio at work - literally - every 20 minutes:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vum3qgoh0x4

What the fuck, man? Does this even qualify as a "song" even by hip-hop standards?

And EVERY OTHER FUCKING SONG in the current "Top 40" uses some distortion on the main vocal of their shitty song.

Fuck 'y'all. I'm going back to the 80's.

That...is neither a song nor music. It's a background sample with bits of sentences.

That's been at number over here for 2 months. That is why no one gives a monkeys arse about the charts these days.

Edit: Not to say its bad, just rather...mundane.

I

FUCKING

HATE

THIS

NOISE

It's the worst shit since that fat bastard Fat Joe made that shit "Lean Back". A bunch of people just rolling their shoulder back is NOT a dance move!

You will see people getting up on an upper level dance floor (either the stage kind or a balcony sort) and trying to "Crank Dat" better than the guy next to him, except they all look like fools. Seriously, it's not like it's a complicated line dance (or a simple line dance) that looks good when executed. It's a bunch of uncoordinated chumps hopping around trying to cut off the guy next to them.

If they put as much effort into learning something useful, like a waltz, then I'd be impressed. All they did was watch the video on Youtube a hojillion times and monkey it.

You think you have it bad. I have to listen to this on the bus everyday. (Thank god I got a ride, in the morning at least) I ACTUALLY KNOW THE WORDS MAN, plus every time I call my friend I have to listen to this song what every happened to just ring ring yeah because that was so hard to listen to.

I feel your pain.

The first time I heard this "song" it was bearable... Now it's just so damn repetitive that I can't stand it. Although watching the uncoordinated farm boys try be "ghetto" and dance to it at Homecoming was entertaining.

I still say that My Humps is worse, for its relentless ability to get inside your brain and never let go.

Soulja Boy, 50 Cent, et al. are rap perversions. Don't let their shitty songs sour you on the merit of real hip-hop.

Lupe Fiasco, Common, and Talib Kweli are examples of authentic artists.

Go listen. Right NOW!

Can't see shit (I'd put up a Ray Charles pic but I'm lazy).

I can't hear the music of the common men above the blastbeats, downtuned guitars, mutilated human vocals and jagged electronics that emanate from my every pore.

That song is terrible, though. Jesus. Oh well, I smirked at the main tune throughout it, though, it sounds like caribbean steel drums, one of the least intimidating sounds there is. All "street" credibility just sort of evaporated there if there was any to begin with.

I wish I could find some portugese folk music online to show how much worse they are. :):)

I heard a song or two by Lupe, and it makes me reconsider my stance that music is going to hell and there is, in fact, nothing I can do about it.

Also, let's not forget that Soulja Boy Tell'em has another song out: Soulja GIRL.

Pop music is sort of my guilty pleasure, so some of the crap that calls itself rap and hip hop is fuel for that fire. But even pop music has the kind of crap pop music fans hate. This is an example of that.

The original is just plain unbearable. The Travis Barker remix, which my local station plays in place of the original, is only slightly more tolerable, but not by much.

Bu-but, those can't be real rap songs! Where are the stupid women dancing around like idiots in too little clothing?

I'm going to buck the trend and declare my enjoyment of the remix version. I think the original is boring but that never gets played in the UK.

Give it a listen.

Also, how fucking awesome is that guy on the drums? That's incredible.

I love the term "Soulja" - implies that any of these fucks could make it in the real military. I mean, hey, if you think bein' a straight Gangsta thug "Soulja" is cool, why not try being a real honest-to-God soldier? Go for it. I fucking DARE you. Let's see you run 2 miles in your gangsta threads. Asshats.

Naw Chardok, it means they are soldiers of SOUL. They have SOUL power, except it's modern SOUL power, which means crappy hip/hop.

Cuz black people have SOUL.

Stuff like "Soulja Boy" isn't supposed to be high art. It's supposed to be a dumb fun song people can dance to at a club or while inebriated. It's got a simple beat, a catchy chorus and it's very own dance. It fulfills all the purposes of a dumb club song admirably.

I can definitely see why people think it sucks, but if you're decrying it as another example of the death of modern music, you're missing the point.

This is just silly. "Soulja Boy" is about as far from gangster rap as you can get without being MC Hammer.

The real interesting thing about the song is that Soulja Boy is only 17 or 18 and became a national phenom without any sort of major label backing. He did all his own production (well, obviously), all his own self-promotion and blew up entirely through the Internet. That's got some big implications for the future of the music industry.
