Having joined the ranks of those possessing a driver's license, I find myself needing some good recommendations for driving music (Or Radio stations beyond the Beeb, but that's useless here).

Currently I fill my commutes with a selection of 4&5 "Star" music (Nothing like the AC Highway chase when you're chasing certain doofuses who are supposed to be leading you somewhere, or "Bad to the Bone with the windows open and the wind streaming through your hair ), some audiobooks (Black-adder currently, but audiobooks are dangerous due to concentration), and a cd of "Power ballads" we bought somewhere in the states.

I'm sure the fine commuters here can give a nice long list to fill those long roads

For pure contrariness, I advise you to go down the street blasting Gregorian chant and head bang to it LIKE it's Bass heavy rap.

OAN, Classic rock, new rock, Country(If that's your thing) and whatever else you like. Stick to music with long slow spaced beats rather than frantic or even "fight" paced beats.

I found my Ministry and NIN albums were the best for driving at length.

You can never go Wrong Listening to Tom Petty while Driving. Runaway is particularly good at 60MPH.

Silence. Don't listen to music for your first couple years or so of driving, you don't need the distraction. Concentrate on your driving and get good at it first, that's going to take at least a year, usually a lot more.

After that, break out the tunes. I go for Led Zeppelin, Blue Oyester Cult, Black Sabbath, Metallica, and live Jimi Hendrix, though any decent classic rock band is good by me.

I second aerius though. Jimi Hendrix is great. Also, music isn't the best idea when you're a new driver (and doubly so if you go by the name of DEATH )

EDIT: Look up my old thread on driving music from the summer, there were loads of good suggestions in there (although I never did cruise down Jasper Ave with Mars, Bringer of War blasting from my truck).

I turn the music off if I'm stressed, navigating, or otherwise doing something that's stressful, and I can ignore things easily anyway. Still, thanks a lot for the concern .

Also, I already have plenty of Gregorian music, "One winged angel" got the chop, but that still leaves plenty of stuff from Halo to Ace Combat 5. .

Won't cars be an endangered species by then?

Also try to avoid the theme songs from Back to the Future and Indiana Jones, as they will inevitably cause your car to speed, travel through time and/or burst into flame.

That's why we have a highly placed inside contact at Imperial Oil. We'll have advance notice of when gasoline's going to run low so we can hoard a few years worth before it's too late.

Currently, silence for me. I'm following Aerius' suggestion, albeit voluntarily - got my first car a year ago, with no stereo. Got myself a stereo after about 3 months, then two months later, some fucker nicked it. Couldn't replace the stereo since it was a 1-weekend special offer at the supermarket, so I'm back to silence (well, road noise, and the overly loud air/heater fan).

Or if you're a genius, you can write up some engine control code and have your car engine play music like the Renault F1 car.

It also plays God Save the Queen.

According to Top Gear the Five greatest driving songs in the world are Highway Star, Born to Be Wild, Bat out of Hell, Radar Love and number one driving song of all time: Don't Stop Me Now.

In all seriousness, keep your radio off and your eyes on the road. Distractions like music keep your mind from reacting at full speed.

Rollercoaster by Major Maker is a nice tune, I just remembered I had a good time driving to that over the summer (it's a very summery tune though).

A lot of Rob Dougan's instrumentals are good, though the best is "Clubbed to Death".

Don't go in for any foot-tapping music. I made that mistake, and I caught myself tapping on the accelerator. Not something to repeat.

Clubbed to Death 1 and 2 are indeed excellent driving choices.

Joe Satriani is awesome. I went to see him once, when he came to Toronto, at Massey Hall. Great gig, it was so loud and clear if I closed my eyes I could'a thought I was standing right in front of the amps on stage.

I also reccomend the song "Ride of the Valkyries" by Richard Von Wagner, especially if you're going through high and hilly areas with lots of curves in the road, it makes you feel like you're flying.

Also, get "Black Label" by Lamb of God and "Ripped Apart" by Devil Driver. Check out "Turbonegro Must Be Destroyed" by Turbonegro. If you're really in the mood, get the "Hell March II" by Frank Klepacki, from the Command & Conquer soundtrack. On the other hand, I don't want to play that particular song in my dad's car because music that normally accompanies a fleet of unstoppable tanks charging through the flats of Texas just isn't too fitting when you have an ordinary station wagon.

Was that at G3 '03 with Vai and Malmsteen by any chance? I was on the balcony seats for that concert, great view, sweet sound, kicked ass.

I envy the both of you for goin gto G3. So much awesome guitar power rolled into one show. The G3 cd I have is great, but its no substitute for being there in person.

You know what doesn't work that well? Classical music. Unless you have an extremely quiet car, it's hard to work with. You have to turn it up very loud and even then you can't hear all the subtleties.

It's the End of the World as We Know It (and I Feel Fine) by R.E.M. Best song to sing along to in your car, IMHO.

Bohemian Rhapsody, as Wayne's World has taught us. Though it would not be advisable to headbang while driving...
