ARToolkit bringing virtual idols to life.

This is kinda of a follow up on the Vocaloid program that is a virtual singing program. So now using this ARToolkit, one can create a virtual avatar that can interact with real objects. Here's a video of the program itself.

Basic demo showing the avatar following an object.

This demo is pretty amazing. You may want to turn down the diabeetus inducing music.

edit

Here's an even better demo.

That is cool. At first I didn't realize what it was doing at first... :)
Then I realized that it was virtual and real interaction.
Then comes Digimons....

That is totally cool.

I watched the fourth video first and initially had no idea what was going on, dumbly thinking it was maybe some sort of volumetric display (missing VF5's mention of "virtual" avatar), which I realized would be impossible.

Then after watching the rest in sequence I see that it works a lot like the PS3's PlayStation Eye with the cards from Eye of Judgement.

If this kind of thing could eventually be incorporated into a camera/display glasses system with a wearable computer, just think: interactive virtual "holograms."

Just like in Denno Coil! :)

I think it's pretty stunningly sad that the use of this is supposed to be 'virtual idols'. What about the GOOD applications?

Well really it's more that both ARToolKit and Vocaloid are being used by a third party to produce these. It makes a rather interesting demonstration, being a completely synthetic and virtual object.

EDIT: Specifically, the most detailed ones seem to be a guy using them to show off CG model work.

So uh, what is it actually for? I suppose you could make lots of "Borrowers" fanfilms. What are the "good" applications of it?

ARToolKit was originally developed for camera tracking stuff.

Do not worship false idols!

Seriously, I guess it's kind of interesting. I don't get the appeal of the whole "idol" thing, but, hey, whatever.

And that music... turn it off, turn it off!
