Does anyone here listen to J-Rock?

Post by Big Phil »

I recently discovered Loudness and I'm not sure how I missed them in the 80's. Any other good (as in they can actually play their instruments and have catchy songs) Japanese rock/metal bands that all y'all are familiar with?
In Brazil they say that Pele was the best, but Garrincha was better

Not much (if any) J-Rock. Mainly J-Pop. and by that, mainly some Anime theme songs (manly OPs and Endings from Gundam Seed and Seed Destiny-that music is so..for lack of a better term emotional and expressive)

I have a little bit of Sigh, who's a kind of Death/Scream hybrid group. They're pretty melodic too at times, pretty good. There's also Chthonic, who I really like, but they're not technically J-Rock, being from Taiwan and all.

I have an album by Hi-Standard titled Making the Road. The opening track is a cover of California Dreaming. Of course, all songs are written and performed in engrish.

My girlfriend loves (and got me sort of into) Malice Mizer, Dir En Grey, Hide, and a little Gackt.

J-rock? I listen to a lot of it, but I don't think I'm really that qualified to make recommendations.

With that said, off the top of my head, I can name Ali Project, Dir en grey, Flow, High and Mighty Color, Jinn, Jyukai, L'Arc-en-Ciel, Malice Mizer, Maximum the Hormone, Orange Range, UVERworld, and X Japan. Of those, only Dir en grey, Malice Mizer, Maximum the Hormone, and X Japan could be considered metal, at least to some degree or another. From what I can tell, Ali Project is mostly neo-classical; Flow, Orange Range, and UVERworld are mostly alternative; High and Mighty Color and Jinn have some metal influence but tend to lean more towards alt-pop; Jyukai is soft rock; and L'Arc-en-Ciel is pure alt-pop.

As always, try them out first.

I don't have any interest in J-Rock or K-Rock, it's too similar to the native versions to be all that interesting. I want the most adorable all-girl J-pop bands only and the most saccharine vocals and sappy melodies, the likes of which couldn't ever be done here in Canada. Something like ZONE.

If you wanna talk Loudness, then you gotta show their greatest song.

Don't forget Kodomo Band with their awesome single Heart of Madness

I quite like Aikawa Nanase. I listen to her music all time. She seems to have a relatively diverse collection of songs.
