itt we shall post examples of the worst webcomics on the internet.

First up the usual suspects: CAD, Questionable Content, Order of the Stick, and xkcd.

Image
Truly, this is the face of a man who has just fallen out of a window

Image
Oh boy, stupid melodrama with the pacing of a snail and tons of retarded 'indie music' jokes, SIGN ME THE FUCK UP! Don't forget the WAAAAACKYYY ROBOT that is always saying sociopathic things, something I have NEVER seen that before. As well as the blond girl who's only character trait is that she has Obsessive Compulsive Disorder! HA HA! Crippling social disorders are funny as hell!

Image
This comic is a wonderful example of how comics are a visual medium.

Image
The joke is that xkcd is really fucking creepy.

Next post is a follow-up with lesser known shitcomics.

This next post is dedicated to the political comic: "Right Left Center." With a name like that, it MUST be non-partisan, right? RIGHT?

Image
Elephants never forget 9/11. 9/11. NINE ELEVEN! Do you remember Nine Eleven? The day that AMERICA was ATTACKED!

oh wait what's this, the same author has OTHER COMICS? I wonder what they could be.

Image
What the hell. what else could this guy possibly have.

Image
There are no words. Just stereotypes.

Oh look he even has a place to donate money to bail his sorry ass out of a MLM scam. Lucky you.

Question of interest, what has Obama classified "rich" as to date, and is it representative of a rich person's income?

The only definitive figure that I've hard is he wants to raise taxes on any individual who makes more than $250k per year. Seems reasonable to me.

You should have posted the "Nor Cal Rapist" comic along with that.

It is also worth pointing out that this comic is produced by a guy. Not a "Single Asian Female."

No idea what that one is.

Which is what makes it funny. (In a really sad kind of way).

What a great punchline. Almost as good as CAD's miscarriage panel.

What was the problem with XKCD and Order of the Stick? If they have one they don't stand out with the other ones.

As for the elephant never forgets...

The main website seems to be gone or down or something, but encyclopedia dramatica has a pretty spot on entry about it.

No, I meant, "Really? The author isn't being ironic? Really?" I had the same initial reaction you did.

I was going to post a scathing diatribe on racism in webcomics, but certain chuckleheads have been rabble-rousing over the fact that I am not falling into line with liking Order of the Stick and xkcd.

Order of the Stick:
If I had to describe it, it would a D&D sprite comic.

Bland stick-figure art. Minimalist stick figure art is not bad on it's own. However, stiff, bland, and inexpressive stickfigure art that is copy-pasted from Adobe Illustrator templates for 20 or so panels is a bad idea. And really doesn't help sell the expressiveness of the characters in the comic, if the don't have any expressions. Of course, you could tell that about the art if you could actually see it.

Comics are a visual medium. Yet, the average OOTS strip is crowded with text to the point where the art is covered up by text. The strip I posted was a slightly exaggerated example, but the average strip is still way to fucking wordy. And there isn't even a discrete punchline in any strip. Burlew is so afraid that a joke will not work that he needlessly shoehorns a dozen mediocre jokes into the comic a hopes one will stick. Bland, bland, bland. Order of the Stick is just so bland and lukewarm, I don't know how anybody can like it.

xkcd:
Next stop, stalkerville. Aside from jumping onto old memes and catchphrases after they have lost their luster, Randall Munroe intentionally or unintentionally reveals some really creepy things in xkcd.

Here is one example:
Image

Oh but this is just one isolated example you ask? Why no, nearly every time that the name of a female is mentioned in xkcd, it is always the same name, Megan. Let's look:

Next stop, stalkerville! Of course, you may think that these are just the characters, and that Munroe isn't that creepy. Of course with stick figure art, and nothing distinctive to say otherwise. However, the stick figure with no hat has stood in as the author surrogate before, and there is no clear indication what is man with no hat and Munroe. There are several comics where the bald stick figure is doing something, and the caption is referring to him in the first person.

One last thing, this is a comic drawn by a grown man with a ball-pit in his home. Let that sink in for a minute.

Thanks. I did come here because I have no taste and am trying to fix it.

I think your complaints towards GitP is more towards "mediocre" than shitty. Or that could just be comparison speaking.

As for xkcd...
...
...
Did not know that.

1) Okay... so because this character has stood in for what the author feels personally some of the time, the next logical leap is that it obviously stands for what the author personally thinks all the time? Am I getting your train of thought correct here?

2) So because the author uses the same name throughout the comic, it obviously means he's obsessed with someone named Megan and on the verge of stalking her? There's no other reason he could possibly be using the name Megan?

3) Last I checked, xkcd doesn't try to pump old memes for humour, but rather takes the concept of memes in general to point out ways in which they're sort of stupid.

I'll admit up front, I rather like xkcd, but I'm not going to go 'zomgodzz sacred comic don't criticize!' But for the moment, your only criticism doesn't even revolve around whether it's good or funny, but rather the hidden motivations of the author.

Okay... so what? All I can think is, "Well, that thing's probably more hygenic than any public ball-pit in the world."

Don't worry- it is currently down.

Okay... so what? All I can think is, "Well, that thing's probably more hygenic than any public ball-pit in the world."
Generally it is considered really creepy for a grown single man to have that in his house. Of course, to be fair, it probably is fun.

Generally? Maybe I'm out of the loop, but I've never heard of a general consensus being reached that single, adult, ball-pit owners are creeps. Hell, seeing as how he's the only person I've ever even heard of having a ball-pit in his house, I think it's a bit too small of a sample pool to deduce any correlation between ball-pit ownership and undesirable personality traits. If he's a creep, okay, he's a creep. I don't think sufficient evidence has been shown for that, but then again, whether or not someone's a creep doesn't have much bearing on whether or not a particular web-comic's crappy or not.

And I do agree, a personal ball-pit would be great. I personally don't consider it a worthwhile use of someone's money, but that's pretty much the only criticism I can level at it.

Its only really creepy if he invites neighborhood kids in to play. If he's by himself, I don't consider it much more odd than a floor-built waterbed.

Well lets see, the 'art' is a bunch of lazy, inexpressive stick figures. As I said before, I'm not opposed to minimalist art or even stick figures. The artist doing them just needs to understand that a stick figure needs to be really expressive in order to pull off what could be done with regular full-figure drawings.

It is also an established convention of comics that the LESS detailed and specific a character is, the more that the audience will place themselves into it. And by association, a critical viewer will place the author in. As for your first point, essentially yes. Munroe gives no indication when the plain stick figure is supposed to be speaking for him, and when that character is a character in his own right. Chances are when it isn't explicitly spelled out as speaking for the author, The bald guy is still speaking for Munroe in some capacity, intentionally or not.

Plus, the first one I posted, that whole speech is written in the first person anyway. Meaning that on some level, Munroe IS speaking through that character.

As for your comment that xkcd doesn't just regurgitate memes, that's funny, because I seem to recall a good proportion of the comics playing memes like lolcats and rickrolling completely straight. Besides, how is this "[pointing] out ways in which [rick-rolling is] sort of stupid." I don't see any kind of commentary on the idea of rick rolling, just that "we rick-rolled Rick Astley and it was funny guys."

To use a more recent example, this one right here. Let's see Ron Paul, Cory Doctorow, and Tron references. Again, played completely straight. I'm not seeing how he is commenting on these memes. Merely regurgitating them.
