I posted my cakes on another board and something happened...

Some one posted condeming my making a fire truck cake to be a tribute to 9/11. I was truly taken aback by this.
Quoted below the response and my rebuttal.
Isolder74 wrote:bluesboyjr wrote:I love the Star Destroyer. But I wouldn't think a cake is the best way to pay remeberance to 9/11.
Why not? It's sculpted like a
fire truck. I'm surprised at you
the Firefighters loved the idea. It's patterned after Ladder 3(the fact it's for someone's 33rd birthday is why it's
Ladder '33') which was one of the
Heroic Fire Units at the
site of the Attack. I actually feel bad for you that I HAVE to explain why making a
cake shaped like a
fire truck can be a tribute to the life of
Firefighters lost in the attack. The Firefighters at this station actually went there to help out with the rescue efforts after the attack making the cake
doubly significant.
I am actually offended that you would think a work of art that took me almost 2 days(including baking time) to make isn't a worthy tribute.
Isolder74 wrote:bluesboyjr wrote:I'm just saying...
"How do you pay rememberance to 9/11?"
"I bake a cake!"
But if the firefighters liked it than that's OK.
Though some wheels would have made it look better. Not that it doesn't look good. 'Cause it does. PLEASE DON'T SHOUT AT ME!!
Look at all the pictures. It has wheels in the finished cake.
Baking a cake that is a work of art is no different then making a sculpture or a painting. The only difference is that the cake only gets to live on in Photographs rather in an art museum. I find fault in you attitude that something that isn't going to last isn't a worthy effort. Art is art and to condem one in favor of another is not appropriate nor does it acknowledge the effort that went into it. Would you dare to go into
Charm City Cakes and say what you did above? Would you dare go into an art museum where sculptures and paintings with the same theme in mind are displayed and say what you said above?
If the answer is no, then it is not appropriate here either.
I did not wake up one day and say hey I'll make a cake for tribute to 9/11. I planned this out and made a conscious effort to do as good job as possible. Baking is not something just anyone can do and making sculpted cakes like these are not easy. Making light of my efforts and skills is both disheartening and insulting.
I should not need the validation of Firefighters.
Does this person's opinions sound shallow or is it just me. Am I right in being offended by his tossing aside my efforts as not being a worthy tribute?
Edit: Part of my quote got left out. Added my closing statement.

He's an immature asshat, is what he is. Just ignore him and if he gives you any more shit, pull out the flamethrower. You have every right to be offended by his attitude, since it doesn't seem too probable that he actually did anything comparable himself.

So I am not being rude in calling him out then?
GOOD!!!!

No. You're being remarkably restrained. In your place I'd have flamed him to a cinder after that second reply. The first is just ignorant and can be chalked up to a mistake. The second is "Okay, whatever, but it's still stupid even if they liked it and I'm right" though he doesn't come right out and say it. It reads a lot like that to me.
Nitpicking about what it looks like etc. He's just being a passive-aggressive whiny bitch.

I'm trying to maintain my never flaming reputation.
If he posts again with the same garbage I might have to break that however..........
I mean he complains about my use of bold to emphasize the important information telling me not
to yell. He doesn't want to hear me yell. I don't get mad easy but It's not a pretty sight if i do.

Make sure it is not a miss Manners forum though. In that case you will have to use underhanded insults that are implied rather than spelled out.
Because otherwise it will be you who gets "punished" by the mods and the idiot would have achieved his goal of ruining your thread.

There are no worries about that. It's the That Guy With The Glasses Forum.

What would be an appropriate tribute, a gold plated firetruck? You used your time and talent to make an awesome gift Isolder, and as has been said the poster is probably some immature dickhead, who probably wouldn't have taken the time to do something nice for someone else. We can only hope he has learned something, but we know he hasn't.

I could do that, gold sugar is something that you can buy at decorator outlets!

Actually, you could use the gold sugar and make a fireman's helmet or even a fire bell. Those can be gold, right? Or at least the bell, to sort of look like brass. Of course, that might be harder to do than a firetruck which is a lot less curved overall.
Still, you could have the bell sitting on a base of sorts, flush with it, like on a pedestal. I've seen that with memorial bells. That way, the bell could be solid and you wouldn't have to bother with a bell clapper or anything.
EDIT:
Actually, just looking at your turkey cakes, if you can pull that off, I think you can make a bell!

I could make a bell but the gold sugar costs about 10 dollars for about half a cup's worth so anything made with the stuff would get expensive very quickly. The turkey is made with a dome and two cakes baked in pie plates so that would be almost a piece of cake to put together until I get to the part where I have to buy enough of the gold sugar to cover it.
Edit: I am planning on making another fire truck this september for the fire station this fall so I'd like to mention that.

Okay, let's put the gold frosting idea aside for the moment, then.
You could make a "silver" bell, perhaps. Or maybe a red fire bell? I don't know if fire bells were ever painted red, but it's just a thought.
Also, since you are making another truck, how about a fire chief's car to go along with it? Maybe some fire axes (cookies?) on a side dish?
Or, you could make a big flat cake with the fire department's seal as a design and go to town with decorative frosting.
Something like this (for the specific fire department you are making the cake for):

they are painted red. Incidentally the gold sugar is intended to be sprayed onto white frosting as a outer coating to color something gold with an airbrush. It was never meant to be used as a base for frosting.

Make a cake of two skyscrapers. Post pictures of them after they've been... half eaten.

no
Rice crispy treats would work better as the cake would collapse under its own weight even with dowels inside.

A date which will live in infamy.
Though really, man. 9/11. A tasty firetruck cake? You
must make a pair of pastry dessert skyscrapers for your next project and take pictures of it after it's been half eaten. Maybe make a couple of eclairs (or sausages) fashioned in the form of airplanes, for added symbolism. Just to spite that guy.
Tell him you made the cake for a 9/11 Truther too.

Not a bad idea but I will not say I made a cake, or anything else, for a 9/11 conspiracy nutjob however.
I will not associate myself with those people, period.

To me, 9/11 =

I just don't make the connection: cake is a happy thing for celebrations like birthdays and weddings, 9/11 is not for celebrating.
Behold the idiot's response.
He really doesn't get it does he?
A post by the next person in the thread.
Felis Leo wrote:Thought it is a time of tragedy, and should be one of remembrance, must it be a somber occasion for all people? Firefighters, for instance, have a hard, brutal and utterly thankless job. They see death and mayhem constantly. I don't think we need another occasion to cry in our beer. Having a cake on September 11 to commemorate the attacks is not a celebration of the atrocity, but a celebration of life. It is a chance to connect with your friends and family. Because who knows? Those you love and care for might be gone in the next instant. Share those good times while you can, for who knows what tomorrow may bring?
I'm pretty sure I can't say it better myself but I thought I'd point out a small American Tradition.
Isolder74 wrote:I couldn't say it better myself.
Hence why we have picnics on MEMORIAL DAY!
Or are you saying we should all wear black on 9/11?
You truly are a thoughtless idiot. NO HOT DOGS OR HAMBURGERS FOR YOU ON MEMORIAL DAY BUSTER!
No matter what you say i am making the firefighters another cake on 9/11 and they will love it. That is all I really care about the matter.
