Avatar Question

Trying to upload an avatar earlier, I noticed that the limit is currently only 6 KB. Is this something recently instituted that I looked over, because I'm sure I've had avatars exceeding 6 KB in the past.

It's always been 6, but I think there was a bug that let avs greater than 6 if linked from some other website.

That's odd. My avatar I'm using right now is over 8K.

Did you upload it?

No, but the one you're looking at now, the old one, is over 6K.

I have no clue why that is...maybe if you're on a different filesystem?

Maybe, well, I'll just download some stuff and compress it.

Hmm, this is really strange; my old avatars, which are above 6K, have no trouble being uploading; my new avatars, however, exceed 6K and cannot be uploaded. Anyone know what's up?

You're current one is ~4.7K, according to Sarah.

Huh, that's odd. Paint Shop Pro (I'm not an image wizard) has it around 8K.

Nope, even when I save it, it's less then 5K.

Oh, that's right. File size estimations in those progs are often wrong, in my experience. It might have been for a max-quality JPEG.

I'm guessing Paint Shop Pro simply is telling you the size of the thing before compression. Which version do you have? You can fiddle around with an optimizer in the later ones.

Ah....taken care of. Just had to goof around with the compression.

Yep. Simply copying and pasting the image into Paint Shop Pro tells you at the file size is 23.4 KB.... at 16 million colors. Reduce down to 256 colors and you get the 8.8 KB figure you got, and finally saving to GIF got you the 4.7 KB that is the actual size. Mind you, this is what you'd expect : 100x80xByte(For 256 colors) = 8 KB, and 100x80x3*Byte : For 16 million, it's RGB all gets three seperate values, from 0 to 255) = 24 KB.

Durran, what's your current avatar? It looks really nice (could be a little clearer, but still really nice).
And would you mind letting me know where I can find the original?

Spanky, sorry for not responding earlier. It's Elhaym Van Houten the heroine of Xenogears, in a sketch. You can find the picture it's taken from here:

and lots of other beautiful Elly artwork here:

Yeah, it's PS, it's something of a cult favorite at this point; I don't think there's a console RPG out there with a more devoted fanbase than XG has, not even Final Fantasy. It's one of the most-sought after PS titles there is now, but if you can find it it's a great experience. The plot just sucks you in.

I had heard it was done by the same team as Chrono Trigger; it's no wonder it's so popular. Preowned it's as expensive as FFX. I'll have to see if my FuncoLand has a copy.
