Is there a reason why they use brass to simulate the ship? I'd have thought it'd be better to actually use the same steel type they planned.

Brass is easy to work with on a model scale; u can just use tinsnips and whatnot. HY120 steel; not so much.

It's just to test the hydrodynamic form of the ship, right? Like, how well its shape and form cuts through the water?

Man, we need ship models made out of gold.

According to the actual caption in that pic, it's for testing EM interference. Perhaps 3 thou brass has a similar permittivity or whatnot to 12" steel?
