Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
So, I decided to go to the Auto Show in town this week to give my DSLR a more proper shakedown. Wound up spending an hour and a half there, which is quite a bit more than I expected. Anyway, I managed to wind up taking some decent shots, so here you go. Incidentally, I'm largely clueless about most things car related, so I'll let other people fill in the gaps, but I'll provide commentary where I can. This is by no means the complete set, but a selection of what I figured were the best shots. For the record, I was using a Canon Rebel EOS XS, and none of the pictures have gone through any kind of touch-ups other than cropping and re-sizing.
The Stingray concept car was easily one of the sexiest machines on the floor. Who knows if it'll go into production though.
The Chevrolet ZR1.
There were even a handful of Jeeps, though I admittedly didn't pay much attention to them.
I'm not sure if this was a concept or not.
I've got a weak spot for gull wing doors, I think these were Jags but I could be wrong.
The Spyder seemed to be getting quite a bit of attention; I was having some trouble getting a good shot because of the crowds.
Quite a few classic muscle cars, another big weakness of mine.
Now for the obligatory nerd post, there were three Deloreans on show there, one of which you could actually get a good view of the interior.
It's no Harley, but I thought the design was kinda neat.
I found the car being called "You Wish" amusing.
More classic roadsters!
This baby was begging for a monochrome shot.
Same vehicle, but in color.
And the last two cars posted without comment.

That blue car with the gull wings definately looks sweet.

Those aren't gull wing doors, and they aren't Jaguars. Those are Lamborghinis, and the doors are IIRC called Lambo-style doors. It's kind of a trademark of theirs.
Jaguars have a jaguar as their emblem, Lamborghini uses a bull, for future reference. And the SLS 500 from Mercedes has the gull-wing doors (as do the DeLoreans you shot).
The tiny little thing is a Smart Car.
Man, I wish they had brought the Stingray to the Edmonton Motor Show back in January. That would have made it way better. It was a pretty dull show up here this year. Not too many concepts, not many really nice cars.
As for your photography: you should try stepping back a bit. Your muscle car shot lost the nose of the car, and that kind of kills it.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, the Stingray looks really nice from the side, but looks kinda ridiculous from the front. Like it's got a goofy smile or something. I almost LOLed at your shot when I saw it. I liked that shot.

That would explain it then, I wasn't sure what some of the cars were.Phantasee wrote:Those aren't gull wing doors, and they aren't Jaguars. Those are Lamborghinis, and the doors are IIRC called Lambo-style doors. It's kind of a trademark of theirs.

I didn't really had a lot of room to maneuver with some of the shots, and at the moment I've only got the 18-55mm kit lens. It was also a pretty crowded floor. As for your photography: you should try stepping back a bit. Your muscle car shot lost the nose of the car, and that kind of kills it.
Also, I do have other shots of that particular muscle car, but I didn't want to go too overboard with the uploading. (I took around 200 pictures altogether).
Other shot!

Zod, it's time to turn in your Man Card. Failure to correctly identify a Lambo is unacceptable.
Scissor doors, actually. Lamborghini popularized them with the Countach and its successors.Phantasee wrote:Those aren't gull wing doors, and they aren't Jaguars. Those are Lamborghinis, and the doors are IIRC called Lambo-style doors. It's kind of a trademark of theirs.

Say, do you want it to be a threesome with your wife? Or a foursome with your wife and sister-in-law? I'm up for either.

Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
Yeah, in environments like that, with close quarters, crowds, ropes, and stuff everywhere in the background, it's basically impossible to make good portraits of cars. If you want to do 'arty' shots the easiest way is to get close and just pick out details - a few lines and shapes, or a hood ornament, or something - otherwise, just go hog wild and take car pix.
I'm torn about the Stingray. It's a great idea, and it looks okay from the windshield back, but I feel like the car's just a bit too truncated from there forward and the curves just too round (even the '70s Stingrays were sleeker), and that shit-eating grin up front...well, it does kind of resemble a stingray's mouth, I'll give them that.

Nothing very impressive. I hate the new Camaro and the one car I do like, the Chevelle, is my least favorite body type.
Oh and just how much time traveling do these people plan to do?!

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

I do have other stuff I could post, but most of it was just the things I thought stood out most. Admittedly I have no idea what you'd consider impressive.Havok wrote:Nothing very impressive. I hate the new Camaro and the one car I do like, the Chevelle, is my least favorite body type.

Sharp angles that will impale small children when you hit them, not just cause them to roll up and over the car or blunt corners that will crush internal organs instantly.

I actually really like the look of that Stingray. It's maybe a bit too sharp, granted, but the flowing fenders and the boattail look sexy.
Is that one of those hood-mounted tachometers on the Chevelle with the shaker hood? It's the oddest thing.
I've been reading up on American car design and if one thing keeps popping out is that there is a very peculiar interplay between massive design inertia to reduce cost and maintain brand recognition and a constant desire to reinvent the wheel so the year's model line-up doesn't look stale. That doesn't leave much room for timeless design and instead encourages eye-catching detail changes on an essentially unchanged platform. Or so I heard. Different tastes, I suppose.Fuck american cars are ugly.

It's an overpriced, dated, money-bleeding Mercedes-backed mistake called the Smart. The Roadster/Coupe version was actually a really cool miniature weekend cruiser until the axed it, but the standard model offers no advantages over a proper three-door small hatch for a higher price and less practicality.I'm not sure if this was a concept or not.
Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
Jee Zuz Christ.
First of all that is a blower on the Chevelle, not a goddamned fucking shaker hood.
And yes it is.

There's a difference? I thought all those accessories you put on the engine and poke through the hood were shakers.First of all that is a blower on the Chevelle, not a goddamned fucking shaker hood.
Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
What is wrong with you? I mean seriously. And don't blame Belgium.
No, Bounty. They aren't all the same. The Dodge has a 'scoop', the Chevy has a blower set up, which is part of the engine and not attached to the hood in anyway. No car yet shown has a 'shaker'.
At least you know to call it a 'hood' and not a fucking 'bonnet' though. Dumbass Aussies.

So... what's a shaker then? No, Bounty. They aren't all the same. The Dodge has a 'scoop', the Chevy has a blower set up, which is part of the engine and not attached to the hood in anyway. No car yet shown has a 'shaker'.
Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
This is a 'shaker hood'
There is an opening in the hood and the scoop actually sits on the engine instead of just being bolted/welded to the hood. Like on the black Charger Zod posted. Since it shakes with the engine, you can figure out where it got it's name from.

Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
So the air intake in that picture, which is bolted to the engine and pokes through a hole in the hood, is a shaker, but the air intake on the Chevelle - whether it's just an intake or a supercharger or whatever, which is also apparently bolted to the engine and poking through the hood, isn't?Since it shakes with the engine, you can figure out where it got it's name from.
Re: Denver Auto Show! (car porn; lol 56k)
No. The shaker isn't bolted to the engine, nor it is part of it. It just sits on the carbs. You can walk up and just lift it off.
Sorry that you have horrible reading comprehension if I wasn't clear on that.
