What does it contain? What is it about?
I would look myself, but I don't feel like downloading a 256 megs book just for the hell of it.

Book of Kells is a very, very ornate hand scribbled bible complete with pictures.
It is a work of art even if you're not the religious type.

That sounds good, I admit. Does it provide footnotes? Translation quality and that sort of stuff?
Or is it just really pretty?

The Book of Kells is the source of much of the "Celtic Knotwork" design style now popular. The Irish monks who scripted and limed it were very talented and very patient. Lots of complicated knots, stylized beasts, and the original colors were quite bright. Nearly every page has a decorated margin, and there are many full-page illuminations of familiar Bible stories.
The Bible verses themselves are Liturgical Latin, so it's not that hard to read if you know your Latin (or your Bible verses).
