I was wonder, seeing how I've found a collection of megaman sprites, how can you make animated gifs? Is their a program in windows already or do I have to download somthing.

There's the gimp at www.gimp.org . You have to get the GIF plugin, which might be illegal unless you want to pay thousands, unless you live outside the USA. There is also M$ GIF animator, but that seems to have dissapeared off the web.

GIFs are patented, (and not an innovative one at that) and therefore evil. Too bad most browsers do not support MNG yet (the animated counterpart to PNG).

I don't think you can find a (legal) free gif animator, because of the patent. Some shareware ones though.

What if you live outside the USA?

Patent doesn't apply outside USA, so you can legally download it from the GIMP website. Of course no one really cares if it's legal.

I'm not sure Gimp does animations though.

Honestly, I couldn't give a horse's ass about that patent. IMO it's illegal and completely unenforceable anyway, so don't pay it any mind.

Mozilla does PNGs, so I don't see any reason MNG support cannot be done. A Google Search reveals that there is quite some activity surrounding the effort to get MNGs to work with Mozzie. Here's an example.

I think Paint Shop Pro allows you to build animated Gifs. I don't have the program but I thought that was one of the items described on the back of the box I was looking at in the store. It might be something that's included with the aniversary or special edition I was looking at.

I'd try checking out the links Enlightenment placed in the stickified subject dealing with image editing programs.

Well if you don't give a shit about patents:
http://jgo.local.net/GimpGuide/anim_gif.htm

Here's the version of GIMP for Windows with plugins. Gif plugin is a seperate download.

Ein, most people still use Internet Exploder. Until we can "enlighten" the masses, we will have to continue to support it.

Stop saying shit like patents and capitalistic behavior is evil, and that people who use Windows and Microsoft products are stupid.

Er, the LZW patent on GIF compression was hardly innovative (the only reason it's used is because the owner let it permeate the marketplace before they demanded royalties (does that mean the patent is unenforceable?). Where have I said capitalism is evil.Stop putting words into my mouth.

EDIT: Well I did say something along the lines of IE users are morons who use shit browsers, but that was a hasty generalization.

I never said people who use MS products are stupid. I use Windows on my main computer anyways. I just don't like their business practices and poor reliability and quality.

There is nothing wrong with paying for a program. However this guy only wanted to make GIFs and I don't think he want's to shell out a lot of money just to make them. There might be cheaper ones from Ulead, but just check out the free ones first if you don't live in the USA, with it's absurd patent laws (eg, someone just patented a way to swing on a swing and some other company patented hyperlinks, and Amazon patented cookies  ). The point of patents is to protect real innovation, not limit competition.

Besides software was originally unpatentable, only hardware.

You don't see me complaining too much about Pharmaceutical patents, do you? (although generics should be encouraged once the patent period is over to save state insurance budgets).

Capitalism only works when there is competition. Looks like you are the anticapitalist.

Have you given any proof, or are you just going to continue these ad hominim attacks? Otherwise shut up.

EDIT:Notice how he does shut up. Good.

If you're going to argue capitalism take it elsewhere, or else this thread is split.
