100x 500 seems to be common amongst the HAB. This does, of course, assume that it's not animated.

And 150 pixels seems to be the limit to avoid people yelling at you that your sig is too big. Shep has just that pic in his sig.

Something small, and with a likewise small file size. Mine is only 400x72, and takes up 10 kb.

I don't think there's a certain limit, but it shouldn't be wide enough as to mess up the page formatting too.
