Hey all...here are some shots of my first scifi mesh. It's a work in progress that has been posted in the scifi-meshes.com WIP forum, but someone suggested I post here as well. I've followed the proportions of the original Lucasfilm model pretty closely, and have done all of the modeling (greebles included) manually, beginning in January and proceeding intermittently up till now. Comments and suggestions would be appreciated.

Welcome my friend, I'm glad to see you've followed my advice. :)

I'd remind everyone that the greebles are all hand done.

I'd give the option of hosting your pics on my webspace, but it's just gone down for some reason :(

A very nice model. I'd say more, but it's 5:30 AM and I'm still drunk...

It is, but you just have to delete the http:// from the picture's URL and hit enter.

Edit: If it's unavailable because the site has exceeded allocated data transfer, it's a different thing. :)

@ fractal

 Your model looks absolutely marvellous, especially in the first pic!

No...all you have to do is click on the address bar again and hit enter. The reason why you can't direct-link it is that using Javascript - probably something like:

Code: Select all

if (referrer != "www.geocities.com/xyz") window.location.href = "404.html" else window.location.href = url
the server can tell that the file request didn't come from a Geocities page. If you copy-paste the link, or even just click on the address bar and hit enter again, there is no referrer so Geocities will load it. Anti-leech system.

The IDC is considering making him a member, should he model the TIE fighter racks and cubbyholes in the hanger bay. Heh. This man is nutz enough to do it too. :p

I like it. I would perfer better lighting for the pictures of the bottom part of the Executor though, I can hardly see anything.

I also want to see it with all the little blue lights and blowing up several dozen rebel cruisers too.

The background could be lighter so you can see all the details. That and the Executor class was more blue than dark gray.

But that is a totally bitching model. Can't wait until you add all the pretty lights.

EDIT: Nevermind about the colour comment. I just realised that this is probably a skinless model and that dark gray could be the default colour for your software.

Very sweet. Better Lighting would be nice however. And i'm sure meshes of Rebel ships can be added at a later point.

Wow, but that really gives the sense of scale on the SSD. Nice job, can't wait to see the textured version.
Nice, this really gives a clear idea of the rear Dome placements, I never realised how much they were offset to the side like that.
Incidentally, you did all the bits manually!!! You are definitely in the running for Alan Harts position of most masochistic detailer. :D
Kojikun mentioned you might be tempted to model all the TIE Racks and other details in the hangars...  If it doesn't drive you mad then go for it, make yours the reference work on the SSD. It'll be LTL and MTL positions next. :P

I said the IDC wants him to ;P

Thanks for the feedback and keep it coming :)

I'm putting new updates on the scifi-meshes.com forum thread I started this ship at, since it seems like people are having trouble with geocities (what a surprise for geocities  )

A few questions though: 1) What is the IDC?, 2) What are LTL and MTL?, 3) Who is Alan Harts?

As far as the TIE racks and cubbyholes (what are these?) go, I will take a bit from what I wrote in teh scifi-meshes thread:

http://forums.scifi-meshes.com/showthre ... genumber=1

"If I didn't think my computer would crash every render if I added tie racks, I probably would :-) Another problem is no one seems to know where the TIE racks are. The model from lucasfilm has several large box-like structures in the main hangar bay (which I have reproduced) that could be TIE hangars, as well as the hangar bay on the fantail, but it doesn't show how they open out into space.

If anyone finds these details, let me know and I'll see if I can put them in without hard-locking 3dsmax :D "

In short, I can't find reference shots for TIE hangars or hangar bay cavities inside the walls of the hangar bays. What is on the wip model (and it is very much a wip on many levels) is what I can see from reference shots of the lucasfilm model. If anyone has better references than the ones posted here: http://www.theforce.net/swtc/exhibit/executor.html

then I'll be more than happy to look at them and incorporate the hangar details. Till then, I will work on refining the greebles around the "tongue" of the hangar, and getting the damn lights right. The main superstructure I think is about done at this level of detail (greeble-ing the greebles will come later)

IDC, haven't a clue. LTL and MTL are Light and Medium TurboLasers respectively. Alan Hart is a 3-D Modeller who spent a lot of time detailing all the fine stuff on my design in this thread, hence my comments.

The Cubbyholes might be the Box-structures you mention below, hangars for TIE's.

Well if you have a copy of the Star Wars Incredible Cross-sections (or know someone that has one and a scanner), it has a cutaway of the Main Hangar of an ISD showing the Rack arrangements. There used to be a cheat you could use to see all the Pages at DK.com, but apparently they've fixed that hole now.

ADDENDUM : Here's a scan of the Picture from the SWTC site. Also there is the view here from one of the ISD's sidebays.

Also if you go here, you'llget all Dr. Saxtons notes on Hangar Bays.

they still havent told you? IDC = insane detail club. Its a bunch of SFMers who add obsessive amounts of detail. Just search SFM for any of the IDC members threads.

That's an awful lot of details (especially the superstructure)
