However, you forgot to adjust it so it fits the 6 KB limit. As it stands, it's close to two and a half times larger than that.

I have Irfanview, which can be used to reduce color depths quite effectively with no loss in visual quality. That's what I used on my (rather creepy) avatar a few minutes ago
