A friend of mine helped me through the design process, gave me back my ego. Lost it out walking, tripped and the darned thing flew right out of my pocket, didn't even realize it.
Image//01: Overall ship. The little things sticking up along the top and front-sides are shield generator points.
Image//02: Inverted the shield generators so they go into the ship, made them look all nice.

Nice ship!
One small nitpick: I would like to see longer gun barrels on the turrets. BTW what type of guns are they?

I like it. Reminds me of the Sulaco.

Hmm interesting. Possibly a far-future descendant of the
Sulaco?

It aint that big, guys
The windows in the front are only about 2.5 metres from top to bottom.
ein, much to your dismay, im probably not going to lengten the gun barrels, i want the turrets to look unconventional, the guns themselves are Heavy XMat guns. The front of the ship has two guns as well, light XMat RRD guns that use a system of beam-direction similar to the way your TV scans electron beams across the screen, which gives each the uncanny ability to hit targets 180° apart in its firing arc in with less then 0.01 seconds between shots. It ends up looking like two shots were fired in opposite directions simultaneously.

Tee hee, it looks like duct work on my dad's HVAC monitoring program from work.
Looks good so far, more stuff will go on the back, right?

Excuse a noob question but how do you guys do these things? I've been toying with the idea of building my own starships for some of my stories to help me visaulize the action and something like this program (whatever it is) would be cool to get my creative juices going.
I've also got to design a Federation TOS era starship design hybridized with Kuat drives design philosphies (essentially a Consitution class/stardestroyer) for my Twilight War story.

Good question...
Now...
We use 3D Modell-/Renderprog's like 3DStudioMax, Lightwave, Cinema4D, Maya, Truespace, PovRay or Rhino.
And we learned to control them.
That's all.
Some are easy to learn...
Some not.
You should have a good computer and a good spatial presentation.
The rest... Learning by doing.

Its funny, even after modelling for like 3 years now, every day I find a new feature in 3dsmax that makes my life vastly easier.

I use Lightwave 7. Lightwave makes the most sense, to me. Everything else is weird, to me.
My computer's specs are as follows:
CPU :: Pentium 4 2.5GHz
Memory :: 512MB DDR PC-2700
HD :: 1x160GB, 1x40GB, 1x10GB USB, all 7200RPM
Also, having photoshop helps for textures (something I fail at
)

I use Cinema4D 8.0
My computer's specs are as follows:
CPU :: AMD Athlon 1GHz
Memory :: 192MB RAM (get 512MB next week)
HD :: 40GB (Rest in Peace
) (buy a new in time)
I'm use photoshop too.

Latest Update. Not terribly much new, just added some pipes and some more shield generators.

btw if youre wondering ho long this sexy bitch is, its ~225 metres fom end to end. Dont ask for stats, unless you wanna pee yourself

Thats a nice ship, I love those turrets
I know its not finished yet, but it looks a little empty at the back of the ship, what plans do you have there? Some cool looking missile launchers maybe? An übergun-of-doom?

in both the top and bottom depressions theres going to be lots of greeblies, some stuff that.. does stuff.. LOL something for the FTL drive maybe? dont know. the rest is gonna have more shield generators (never enough
) and some mroe greebles. as a whole im gonna add some more useless minor detail to break up the surface. textures will help. I'm waiting for Flood to get online. My inspiration is running out
lol

Pretty nice.
Thats a very long window though at 225m long, is that widow floor to celing? Why red?
Love the guns though. Very nice. I really like the lack of barrles, good touch. That and the mount, very original imo. The piping on the back end looks like a tailpipe though.

yeah its a nice big roomy bridge.
And red is a cool ominous colour that real militaries use in their hightech monitoring rooms. I wanted the ship to look evil and ominous, but in reality theyre the good guys. The bad guys have smooth bright-white ships with very few pitch black greebles. I like breaking the rules that good = light, bad = dark, or that good = smooth (think Naboo ships) and that bad = grungy industrial (think Empire). I also am making my bad guys into a kind of China-like totalitarian government that is not hell bent on conquering the world for obscure motives but just out of typical expansionist motivations. They're real people, one of them, the defense minister, objects to the expansionist policies as being a waste of resources so her family is blown up!

Its supposed to look like a tailpipe
And the guns were inspired by a friends guns on his ships. I think his guns had lots of barrels tho. I dont like barrels, they're cliche and unnecessary for guns that are about 40 feet long.

Very nice!
Windows 2,5 metres in height? WHy would they need to be that high?
The turrets are stupendous, very ZAON-ish, and frankly, the barrels don't need to be long, that size is great (as in different), I think there are already too many turrets with long barrels.
I think in the future, the barrel should only serve as a pointing lens, all the generation/acceleration of the "beam" should be done on the inside of the ship, where it is safe, barrels are too exposed to space.

Cause it's nice to have a better view.

Hah! Yes, I was browsing Justin's pics for inspiration when one of his ships turrets inspired me.
Didn't know anyone at SDN knew about Zaon tho.

Well if you're using turrets, some manner of barrel is necessary, you need to be able to rotate the thing otherwise you might get dispersal caused by post-collimator diffusion. however, that doesn't mean the barrels have to stick out of the entire turret.
