dude, it's a spontaneus phenomenon. anything with a latin beat can trigger it. You can, however eliminate that damn nonsense that is the chicken dance and the cha-cha slide.... just forbid the DJ from playing it under penalty of death.

I've been to events with conga lines. They're easily avoidable by sitting at the bar and drinking a lot (though I'm led to understand that this behavior is actually responsible for many manifestations of conga line behavior).
