Nope, just shitloads of reflective surfaces. it took like 10 minutes to render because of the enclosed reflective surface. And did you to the swirly effects with some outside program?
I actually made the plasma in lightwave, but rendered it seperately, brought it into photoshop, blurred it up, and used various blend settings to get it all nice. The entire thing was retouched in photoshop alot before the final product here. Before it was touched up it looked like this:
and the plasma looks like this before using transparency maps and modification in photoshop:
