Ok, now once again, I plead ignorance for any of this, I need a transparent graphic with higher colour than a gif allows, is there an easily viewable (read - not going to appear as a red x on some peoples machines) web graphic format which I can use to get this? And can I make it with Photoshop or PSP?

Use PNG. It also supports 8-bit alpha, which is nice but IE only renders 1-bit alpha for some reason.

So, (and bear with me, because I only came across alpha in the past few weeks with HW2 badges), does that mean that I can only get straight forward black/white alpha layers on IE? That's not particularly a problem, as I really just needed something that wouldnt screw the colours up but could still be transparent as an image.

Thanks. :)
