How come when Venkman said "If we think of J. Edgar Hoover, J. Edgar Hoover will appear and destroy us", J. Edger Hoover didn't appear, being as Venkman had to think of him to say his name?

Ray probably thought Marshmellow Man before Venkman thought that.

The time of the choosing probably happened after he said that.

Because Venkman's mouth isn't attached to his brain...

I was thinking along those lines. Ray's distinctly quiet for a few moments after venkman says that and Gozer says the choice has been made after he says it. Venkman probably wasn't thinking of a visual image of J Edgar Hoover, but said it off the cuff, without linking anything to it in his mind.

Ray choosing beforehand is simpler, but it really does look like he thinks of it afterwards.
