I want my new Spongebob av to have a full alpha channel like Durandal's Marathon symbol. Can anyone help me or find a good tutorial for me?

Save it as a 24-bit PNG over a transparent background...that should do it. Or you might be able to specify the matte color.

Done:

Second link renamed for DLing convenience.
The problem is that gimp doesn't support changing palette when using alpha (w/o special plugin which I don't feel like packaging (I package everything installed systemwide)), meaning I had to switch the palette to 37 colors, switch it to 24 bit, cut out the background, and send it through pngcrush with the brute-force option testing all 115 methods of optimization to fit the avatar . Can you do better with Photoshop?
I shrunk it to about 97-98% for cosmetic purposes. Can't get rid of halo, would be too time consuming.

Danke Schoen, Plutonium!
EDIT: Anyone else who thinks Spongebob looks stoned in that pic raise your hand *raises both*
