I've been thinking of redoing the main website's frontpage (see http://bbs.stardestroyer.net/viewtopic.php?t=34506 for the details) and many people have suggested that Vader's picture be redone into a full-blown WW1-style "I Want YOU!" recruiting poster.

How many people here have the necessary PhotoShop skillz to do something like that and make it look good? For that matter, who has good examples of WW1-era recruiting posters to copy for general style and layout?

General style is a bit more cartoonish than the one you use, directly from photo. It would actually take some drawing skills to make one.

The Kitchener poster is pretty simple.

It'd be nice if one could insert various Imperial officers and troops behind him as well.

That one's also the most famous of them all, though it had several variations of the text. However I highly doubt Wong's skills are up to the task, Kitcheners posters where made most of the best artists in the country.

At least it can't be as bad as the Uncle Sam rip-off which always looked like the guy was secretly pissing himself.

I like the original Vader pic, it's simple yet works.

This the sort of thing you're after? I did that just between some coursework I'm doing so it's not good or anything. I need to learn all these features in The Gimp.

Realistically, would the Empire put Vader on their recruiting posters? I'd think they'd sooner use a stormtrooper or a handsome, anonymous model type dressed in one of their fleet officer uniforms.

Why didn't the British do the same? Kitchener and Vader are decent analogs, and the intended audience here is the real world public rather than citizens of the Empire.

It's a good idea.

You need a member of the forces with authority. Lord Kitchener was a no shit person and that poster was basically saying "If you don't go out and fight for your nation, you're worth less than scum to me!". And it worked.

If it had just an average Joe, it'd be useless and the looks are the main part hence why the Uncle Sam poster was a flop. It just didn't look intimidating or serious enough.

I'd keep Vader, he's the ultimate Imperial symbol of strength and authority second to the Emperor, but Palpatine doesn't have a face for this.

Let me put it this way, I can't imagine anyone BUT Vader on such a poster.

There's a really good either ANH or ESB poster with Darth Vader stepping forward and clenching his fist dramatically. That'd be a good start and it's also more original than the cliched pointing strict man.

Vader doesn't really have a face for it either. He's just a black mask. And he's a Sith Lord. Not someone I'd expect Imperial propagandists to use for recruiting purposes. In fact, I have a hard time believing that the Emperor himself would want Vader to be widely exposed to the public eye. Throughout the OT, Vader was basically the guy that the Emperor sent to cut through all the bullshit and get things done, but did that make him the Emperor's heir? Did he have an official standing within the Empire's hierarchy at all?

I guess what it all boils down to is whether Mike's aiming for parody or realism. The Uncle Sam/Lord Kitchener take just smacks of parody to me, but maybe that's what he wants.
