Retro Racer

Well, i thought I'd do something completely off the wall... I'm building a car! This is about the 4th attempt at a bodyshell, I've never built a car before so I spent a couple of hours last night making this basic shape and the simple wheels, and i thought I'd quickly colour in some windows and let you guys rip it to bits. It's just a rough body shape at the moment, I need to cut in proper windows, doors, panels and so forth, as well as add all the other bits and pieces that go to make up a normal car. My first major decision however is whether to go with retro stlye wheels as in the first couple of pics, or to go with newer, thinner rubber and a more modern wheel design. If I go retro then I'll have to make the car detailing more retro as well, so it's a major decision at this stage. The shape itself just came from 15 minutes of sketching, I think it's reminiscent of Aston Martins and maybe a couple of American muscle cars such as the newer Corvettes or the earlyier Mustangs. I wanted something that James Bonds American cousin woulddn't mind being seen driving, something with a bit of style but obviously well muscled. Anyway, this is what I'm going to try and persevere with, comments welcomed.

Other than the complete lack of doors, lights, etc, it looks pretty slick.
So... where do the machine guns pop out?

I LIKE IT!!!
Are you going for the Chevy corvette look or the Ford GT40 look?
EDIT: What happened in the second pic? BTW you might want to inline a small version of the pics and link em to the big ones like so:

Love the way you've done the rear-end, it's spot-on for a late 60s design. Therefore I think you should go down the retro route.
I have an issue with the front wheels though. Construction and Use Regs prohibit wheels that protrude beyond the bodywork like yours do - it wouldn't get type approved like that. I once had a RL modified motor that got me into trouble for infringing this one. All it takes to be legal BTW is a token bulging somewhere at the top - there's no regulation for how far around the wheel the coverage should go - although bear in mind the problem of dirt and stones getting sprayed onto the side bodywork.

Read the OP. He's not done yet. Therefore, don't comment on anything except the shape.

Thanks for the comments guys, always good to get some input on a design like this. I suppose everyone knows exactly what they like when it comes to cars, which makes it hard to design the bloody things and this is my first real attempt that looks anything like a car and that I might actually finish! I've played around with some ideas for a couple of hours and come up with this. It's not technically brilliant, I might have to go back to an earlier incarnation and redo some of the panels and details, but this is the direction it appears to be going. the door lines are a bit *meh*, and I now think the spoilers a bit tacky, but at the time it looked like it needed something at the back.
I did base the rear on the 68 Mustang as i remember it from bullet, but i thought I'd try and make it more modern with the cut-out for a rear window and make this a mid-engined beasty. I'll add a vented bonnet in the cut-out area so we know there's a beefy powerplant under there, and continue adding all the other details and styling cues. You'll also notice the GT-40 style lights, which i went for after trying square lights. Good God the square ones looked shit! I need to add the lens and suchlike of course, but you can get the idea from the covers. I have to admit that I'm not too worried about type regs, this is after all my flight of fancy and not a real vehicle. Comments again, are welcome...

Viper (wheels)
'vette again (Cabin area)
'vette again....'78 stingray-like (the body skirting)

Another idea:
See the 'reverse' hood scoops on this GT40? That's actually a front wing in disguise. Your car is just *begging* for something like that as well as a slightly lengthened nose.
Note: Pic taken from
this website about the 2004 Ford GT40. Yes, Ford is making the GT40 again (even in limited numbers)! W3w7!
EDIT: Hey Kenny, ever considered a career in concept car design?

I am toying with the idea of bonnet scoops similar to the GT-40 and the Lotus Elise, but I'll have to try it out first to check the feasability of even doing it to this mesh. Right now it looks like a Marcos racing car, something I'd rather avoid if I could. I think maybe it's that spoiler that's causing it to look that way, I might have to redesign the rear end a little when I put in the louvred engine bay cover.
On a slightly different note, anyone got a good idea for a name for it, I'm stumped?

Update:
Changed it to a red colour, since it will be turned into a full-on race car and everyone knows red ones go faster. I've added detail to the rear and front, changed the wheels for slightly more retro looking ones that aren't a rip-off from the Viper and gave it some exhausts. Still needs a lot of details, a race paint-job and a name. I tried bonnet vents like the elise and the GT-40 but it sucked hard. The more little details I add the more it becomes believable as it is, without drastic changes to it's shape. Once I've got it near complete I'll do an HDRI lit picture, to try and get as realistic as possible an image as I can.

OK, final update before i finish all the detailing and race colouring, i wont bug you all with any more minor changes. This time I'm trying yet another set of wheels for size and I've addedthe headlights themselves, along with some vents under the chin and a few minor additions like the filler cap and bonnet louvres above the engine. Still to add wipers, rear lights and details, race colours, basic interior, etc etc... Notice I also tried out HDRI lighting and reflections to give it a little more realistic look this time, the last renders looked almost like cel-shaded pictures.
As for names, I think Paladin was used either in Midtown Madness or another game for the race-car design used in that. I dont think Paladin really suits this machine, so I await any further suggestions. I need to name it and then I'll need a logo to stick on the rear and bonnet badges in order to finish it.

How about the name "Hurricane Blackguard"?

Hurricane has the right connotations, but 'blackguard'? Are you aware that's like calling it the Hurricane Bastard or Hurricane Traitor? I think not, but Hurricane I like...
