Might our resident Avatar experts take a crack at turning these into Avatars? I am thinking two versions would be nice. One with a black background to contrast the patch, the other is removing the white background so that the nose of the Defiant is seen contrasting with the page itself.

I would take a crack at it, but it seems some of our resident experts can make them large in pixels while keeping the quality. Something I can't do.

The Defiant one is hard to do properly without having a fairly big filesize, I think. I'll work on it...

I can get them to be around 9kB as GIF images at 100x100. I'll have to drop down the resolution to get them under 6kB.

edit: Scratch that! I can get them under 6kB, but you'll loose a little color using the "Save for Web" function in PS. Uploading now.

It would be so much easier if there was a file format that could do hicon keys or something instead of transparency by color...unless Phong and Durandal have some tips?

The only options we have are GIF (1-bit alpha), PNG8 (1-bit alpha) and PNG24 (8-bit alpha). Unfortunately, that avatar is too complex color-wise to use PNG24's decent transparency. It'll have to be shrunk down, probably.
