Check it out, boys and girls:

As you can see, it has vastly superior joint articulation when compared to the original toy, combined with die-cast metal construction with rubber tires and, yes, the Autobot Matrix of Leadership in his chest. Estimated price is $80 and it comes out later this year.

There's also a Megatron statue:

This one's about $160. It stands about 12 inches tall and is highly detailed, with surface cracks and other battle scars.

Damn, that's sweet. But I actually still have my old Optimus Prime from the orginal run. Ah... memories.

Uts got the Japanese version (Master Piece Convoy) for his birthday a few weeks ago, and it's way better than that US version (seriously, that picture looks like crap compared to it). :)

Other than the Evangelion Soul of Chogokin figures, it's easily the best God damn toy ever made.

Megatron doens't transform, though, does he?

Methinks someone might get Optimus Prime for a birthday pressie...

Nope, Megs is just a figurine. Uts thinks that a Master Piece Megatron might be possible, but I personally dismiss it as delusional, and think that a MP Soundwave would be more likely. That is, if the MP line extends beyond Optimus.

But if you have enough money and are lucky enough to get your hands on one, an MP Optimus is simply divine. :)

*bemoans the lack of quality die cast toys

Wow, looks just like the cartoon character. Though the vehicle mode doesn't look as good as the original toy (which I still have :D ) but its still kick ass.

I love that they have the Matrix thingy in his chest too.

Another downside to the US version is that it's virtually all plastic, while the Japanese version is mostly diecast metal. :)

I have a friend who's really into transformers and may get this. I think he told me that the matrix lights up or glows in the dark or something.

Optimus' body has a button that when pressed, causes a very bright blue LED in his chest cavity to light up, illuminating the centre of the Matrix. The Matrix itself does not actually light up or glow in the dark, since it is chromed plastic and removeable.

I think I barely missed the Transformers when they were popular.

BTW, what is Megatron again?

Megatron is the evil leader of the Decepticon forces. He transformed into a Walther P-38.

The US Optimus also has short smokestacks.

Last time I checked, that wasn't a Transformer.

Would you look at that? His gun actually fits into his hand  .

I think I'll get the Japanese version; not so much because of the smokestacks, but because it's made mostly of die-cast metal.

That always bothered me. Where did the rest of him go when he transformed? I mean, he was small enough for Soundwave to pick him up and shoot with.

The pretty much accepted fan theory is that Transformers store their additional mass in subspace pockets.
